Under direct management, the Phlebotomy Supervisor will oversee the daily schedules of the phlebotomy team, ensure the timely collection of blood collections, provide customer relations and when needed, procures blood specimens from the in-house and outpatient areas. Other duties include monitoring Epic for overdue patient specimens, routing phlebotomist to provide the best workflows and oversee the development, training and monitoring of all phlebotomists.

Education

  • Associates Degree (2 year) in Medical Laboratory Technology, Nursing or related field is preferred.

Experience

  • 3 years phlebotomy experience

Skills

  • Knowledge of biology and clinical medical science
  • Knowledge of safety, infection control, and other regulatory standards
  • Skill in oral and written communication
  • Skill in basic computers and personal productivity applications
  • Ability to demonstrate technical phlebotomy skills

Physical Requirements

  • Frequent walking and standing. Ability to lift 20-40 lbs.

Working Conditions

  • Works in an office like environment, exposure to moderate noise levels from computer, phones and laboratory equipment,
  • Exposure to biohazardous material when handling specimens, however, minimal harm when appropriate safety precautions and established protocols are followed.

Patient Population

  • Demonstrates competency in the delivery of care and applies the knowledge to meet age-specific needs if applicable.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Extracts blood from patients and performs all phlebotomy procedures according to established, aseptic venipuncture technique.
  • Coordinates and monitors activities of personnel engaged in drawing blood specimens from patients. Closely reviews work priorities and distributes work assignments according to Phlebotomists' skills and abilities. Follows up to ensure work is completed. Ensures quality standards are met.
  • Oversees orienting and training new phlebotomists as well as other hospital personnel by demonstrating and explaining aseptic venipuncture technique.
  • Supervises the daily operations of all inpatient and outpatient areas. Ensures appropriate wait times for all customers.
  • Provides input into the development/revision of work procedures for assigned areas and evaluation process of employees.
  • Assigns daily workload and ensures adequate coverage by developing the work schedule (including the On-Call schedule) in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Supervises the operation and maintaining instruments and equipment in optimal working order, with proper documentation; prevent loss or abuse of equipment.
  • Oversee inventory and the ordering and maintenance of phlebotomy supplies.
  • Assists with the competency testing of all staff and ensures completion is done by designated date.
  • Works directly with the Core Lab Manager to ensure statistics are completed on time.
