Job Summary:

The primary function of this unit is to provide an effective and efficient link between the hospital community and the Hospital Police Department operations and services 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The Hospital Police Department maintains the responsibility of providing a safe and secure community for Wayne UNC Health Care. The Hospital Police Supervisor works as a Patrol Sergeant who manages and directs teammates (employees) in general patrol, traffic enforcement, and investigative work. The Hospital Police Supervisor requires knowledge of teammate availability, skills, and resources to designate assignments. Establishes employee work expectations, reviews reports and assesses squad performance based on these standards. Hospital Police Supervisors have exceptional communication and negotiation skills as they have the dual responsibility of law enforcement and public service. Hospital Police Supervisors have full powers of arrest and enforce the laws of the State of North Carolina and the United States Government. Work involves supervision and/or management of a unit of officers or other departmental personnel in their responses to routine calls, emergencies, and other law enforcement services provided. Hospital Police Supervisors evaluate appropriateness of officer responses; designate assignments; direct needed resources; and interpret laws and department policies and procedures. Duties may include orientation and training of officers, inspections of officers and/or other departmental personnel on a shift, coordination of pre-shift briefings, review of all reports and investigations accomplished during a shift, activity coordination, discipline, conducting performance reviews, and providing input concerning operational planning.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Associate's degree or higher level of education preferred. High school diploma or GED required.

Licensure/ Certification:

* IAHSS Supervisor Certification or ability to obtain within 6 months.

* Intermediate Law Enforcement Certification through the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission is preferred.

* NECESSARY SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS: As set forth in N.C.G.S. 74E-8, applicants for commission as a company police officer and a commissioned company police officer must meet and maintain the same minimum pre-employment and in-service standards as are required for State law enforcement officers by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission, and must meet or maintain any other pre-employment and in-service requirements set by the Attorney General. Out-of-State candidates should have the ability to achieve certification within one year of employment. * Out-of-State candidates must have successfully completed a Basic Law Enforcement Training course accredited by the state of transfer to be considered. Out-of-State candidates cannot have a break in service from the out of state agency of more than one year. All out-of-state candidates may possibly have to complete 96 hours (or more) of training to be eligible for NC certification, pass the State exam or other requirements set forth by the North Carolina Law Enforcement Training and Standards Commission. Experience Five years of supervisory experience, preferably in a healthcare or campus law enforcement setting. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities * Leadership qualities, e.g., maturity, job knowledge, professionalism, communication skills, etc. to lead, guide and motivate others. * Ability to read, write and communicate effectively in English. * Proficient with MS Office and able to learn new software rapidly.

Valid NC Driver's License Yes No If driving a Wayne UNC Vehicle, must be 21 years old and MVR must be approved by Risk Management.
