SUMMARY:

As an integral contributor to the Office of Admission, the Associate Director or Regional Associate Director is responsible for recruitment, selection and enrollment of a talented and diverse incoming class each year and the successful management of the international recruitment effort. The Associate Director for International Admission may be based in Richmond or in an approved domestic location outside of Virginia. In either location, the Associate Director will work closely with the AVP and Dean of Admission on international strategic planning, with day to day reporting to the Director of Admission for Operations. The Associate Director manages all aspects of recruitment within an assigned geographic territory (international and domestic), plans, implements, and assesses admission activities and programs, and represents the University to a broad and diverse audience. In partnership with the Associate Vice President and Dean of Admission, and the senior admission leadership team, The Associate Director is charged with providing leadership and contributing to strategic direction for international recruitment as part of a progressive and highly collaborative team.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

International Recruitment and Admission
  • Lead international recruitment strategies and manage the execution of the international recruitment plan
  • Provide strategy and plan, implement, and assess office-wide international travel recruitment and application generation activities including market research and development; create a master plan to appropriately cover travel regions around the world; train admission officers to travel internationally and review applications from non-US educational systems; research budgetary needs and allocation of funds by region; coordinate and analyze internal and external data to evaluate ROI of various activities on applications and yield; and monitor international recruitment trends to project future staffing travel demands. Cultivating ongoing partnerships with international school networks such as United World Colleges is an important part of the overall international recruitment strategy.
  • Lead the selection of international candidates for admission and scholarships within a need-aware international admission process.
  • Collaborate and coordinate with the Financial Aid Office to oversee and deploy the international student aid budget to align with the University commitment to meet full demonstrated need for all admitted students, including international citizens, and the Office of Admission mission and goals.
  • Research educational systems and systems around the world and serve as the team content expert for recruitment planning, publication review, and staff development.
  • Manage international recruitment budget; prepare and monitor budgets, reconcile expenditures, and research and develop program enhancement requests related to project responsibilities.
  • Manage the issuance of immigration (Visa) documents (I-20s) for enrolling undergraduate international students and serve as a Designated School Official, U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
  • Serve as the primary liaison with the Office of International Education.
Prospect Management Responsibilities and General Recruitment Activities
  • Establish short- and long-range prospect management goals and action plans for assigned regions, both international and domestic. Develop and implement strategies and tactics to identify and strengthen potential prospective engagement and interest in assigned region.
  • Develop expertise for designated geographic territory using various data to determine the recruitment goals and strategies for the region.
  • Utilize relational databases to facilitate and assess recruitment activities. Annually review, revise and develop year-end reports for regional prospect management, and recruitment activities.
  • Determine the recruitment and yield activities that are most effective for each market sector and develop a plan with justifications for selected activities; manage the travel budget for expenditures associated with off-campus recruitment and yield activities.
  • Plan and implement admission activities related to the recruitment and yielding of prospective students, including planning all travel logistical arrangements and coordinating high school visits, regional receptions, counselor workshops and/or off-campus interviews.
  • Build relationships with prospective students and serve as the primary point of contact for designated geographic territory.
  • Counsel and interview students to determine the students' educational interests and needs and align those interests and needs with the attributes and strengths of the University.
  • Cultivate and sustain collaborative relationships with secondary school counselors, independent counselors, foundational officers, and community-based counselors to encourage top prospects to consider Richmond as a first choice. Sustain long-term productive contact with these constituencies throughout the enrollment cycle through various outreach channels.
  • Lead an Admission Committee in the holistic review of the academic and personal qualifications of candidates for both acceptance and merit scholarships. Contribute to the final shaping of the class to meet institutional goals.
  • Serve as a representative of the University to a wide and diverse audience at college fairs, high schools, information sessions, and regional receptions. Create and deliver informational and compelling messages that address the educational needs of various groups. Develop and innovate new presentation concepts and ideas as appropriate for evolving audiences.
Off-Campus Programs Management and Supervision
  • If based in Richmond, serve on Admission management team, providing daily supervision as part of a team of 29 members
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate long-and short-term team goals and action plans, including outreach and diversity initiatives.
  • Create and compile annual reports and updates.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • A thorough understanding of and appreciation for the selective, private college admission process.
  • Ability to clearly and compellingly articulate the strengths of a liberal arts education and residential university experience, particularly to those who are not familiar with this model.
  • Deep understanding and appreciation for the positive contributions that international students bring to a university campus and strong intercultural fluency.
  • Demonstrated commitment to supporting access to selective university admission for historically underserved student populations.
  • Experience in supporting inclusion and a sense of belonging within a diverse community of students, faculty and staff.
  • Knowledge of national and international student markets and mobility trends, and ability to utilize data to assess, evaluate and validate decisions.
  • Highly self-motivated and independent critical thinker.
  • Advanced problem-solving capabilities, creativity, and strong work ethic.
  • Demonstrated success working collaboratively with various internal and external constituencies.
  • Persuasive oral communication skills, including excellent public speaking skills; strong written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively lead, train, inspire and develop staff.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks concurrently coupled with excellent organizational skills and highest standards for accuracy
  • Familiarity with software platforms such as relational database systems.
  • The ability to handle highly confidential information is required.
  • Extensive experience with Microsoft Office products.
  • Ability to manage budgets.
  • Must have a valid passport and the ability to travel internationally.
  • Must be able to lift boxes of up to 30 pounds.
  • Must be willing and able to travel up to eight weeks each semester
  • Required: Must have a valid Driver's License and be able to produce a driving record with a minimum of 3 years of driving history in good standing
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
  • Master's degree preferred; Bachelor's degree required.
  • A minimum of five years of professional experience in college admission, including responsibilities for domestic and international recruitment, travel strategy and management, and application review. Competitive candidates will have at least seven years of experience with a primary focus on international recruiting and admission.
  • Prior supervisory experience is preferred
  • If working remotely, prior experience as a regional admission professional is preferred
  • Experience as a DHS Designated School Official is preferred
  • Fluency or proficiency in second language preferred
WORK HOURS:
  • Full-time, exempt position
  • Monday - Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.; 7.75 hrs./day; 38.75 hrs./week
  • This position requires extensive travel and working weekends or evenings for special programs at peak times throughout the year. Each year the Office of Admission visits more than 1,000 high schools and attends college fairs in 40 states, Puerto Rico, Washington, D.C., and 20+ countries.
  • Full time remote work is available for this position, provided the home location is approved in advance. If the employment location is remote, the position will require travel to campus throughout the year to participate in training, recruitment and yield events, and admission committee. The approximately 6 trips to Richmond each year are in addition to domestic and international recruiting travel.

SALARY STRUCTURE:
Pay Grade 7 (Hiring Range $54,413.00 to $72,093.00 annually)
