Head NurseJob DescriptionReports to:Camp DirectorAcademy Camps is an overnight sports-specific sleepaway camp experience that takes place on the campuses Blair Academy (NJ) and Suffield Academy (CT). We're looking for experienced, organized, and empathetic Head Camp Nurses for our 2025 summer session on the campus of Blair Academy.Who we areAcademy Camps is a modern approach to the sports camp experience. We offer 1- and 2-week sessions for Boys & Girls aged 10 - 15 interested in baseball, basketball, field hockey, football, golf, lacrosse, running, soccer, softball, squash, swimming, tennis & volleyball. Our campers choose one of our 13 "Academy Sports" and receive 2 intensive training sessions per day with our high-performance coaching staff.We are a dedicated team of high performance coaches, nurturing & exemplary counselors, and experienced camp professionals, passionate about the 'whole athlete'. Outside of sports specific training sessions, AC is distinguished in delivering programming focused on its pillars of Performance, Wellness, Mindset, and Leadership mixed in with a healthy dose of fun through a daily schedule of traditional sleepaway camp activities.The positionThe Head Nurse is responsible for overseeing the health and safety of campers and staff. As a Head Nurse, you will oversee the full medical team of 2-3 nurses to care for ill or injured campers. You will also guide the collaboration between the full medical team and the athletic trainer.KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:Provide healthcare to meet the individual needs of camp staff and campersCollaborate with other medical staff to meet medical needsFollow health care policies/procedures as described in the Healthcare Manual and treatment proceduresOrganize, maintain, and utilize adequate resources for serving the health and medical needs of the campers and staffSet up/maintain the camp Health CenterInventory and order any necessary medical supplies and equipmentMaintain accurate and detailed medical records according to state and American Camp Association StandardsEnsure staff and camper health examinations are current and on filePrepare and utilize daily (CampMinder) medical log for treatment and medicationsPrepare and record insurance and accident report formsOversee First Aid procedures and suppliesPrepare and distribute first aid kits throughout camp (as needed) including camp vehicles, kitchen, offices, pool area, activity areas, and session 'bridge day' local out-of-camp trips (between Sessions 1, 2, 3, and 4)Ensure supplies are well stocked and distributed as neededEnsure a staff orientation session is delivered on medical services (During the week of June 13 - 21)Ensure camp staff and campers know their role related to health care and first aid, inclusive of the Epi Pen trainingProvide the CPR/first aid training for all applicable staff (recommendation includes at least all Sports Directors and Head Coaches)Provide or ensure the orientation is provided that includes standing orders, clinic hours, specific camper health and social needs, health center procedures, emergency procedures, growth and development of age groups, staff health assessment of campers, policies on contacting parents, transportation to outside health facilities, accident prevention and risk management, nutrition, and first aid in the camp settingScreen all campers and staff who are arriving and departing campVerify health history and examinationVerify emergency authorizationIdentify any observable evidence of illness or communicable diseasesConduct a health assessmentOn camper arrival day: collect all medications used by campers and staff. Interface with parents to answer questions, get clarity on camper medical needs & medication distribution specifications, collect medications, and store them securely in the health centerOn camper departure day: prepare any remaining medications to be distributed back to camper/camper families. Be available to answer parent/camper questions. Provide leadership in the camp's risk management program. Oversee the Medical Team's responsibility to contact parents concerning the status of their child's health by telephone in the following situations: any injury requiring an x-ray, illness requiring an infirmary stay and emergency treatment/accident, etc. Be knowledgeable of outside health resources.Evaluate medical services.Participate in supervising sanitary conditions throughout campObserve daily cleanliness in the food service facility and other areas throughout campReport any health problems or symptoms of illness to the Camp DirectorYour Knowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesQualifications for Minimum Education and Experience:Registered nurse (RN) with a license as required by state lawCPR certifiedCurrent First aid certification and experience in first aid and emergency managementDriver's licenseExperience in both children and adult illness/injury careDesire to work with children and young adultsCommunity health knowledgePhysical Aspects of the Job:Ability to lift/assist campers and staffAbility to read and follow directions on medication labels, health forms, physician orders, and parent lettersAbility to use a telephoneAbility to maintain a written record systemAbility to quickly get to remote locations on camp property in the camp cart, vehicle, or walkingObserve and assess the sanitation and safety conditions of the campAbility to communicate with parents, staff, and administration about camper health concernsPossess endurance to meet emergency needsAbility to drive in Academy Camps' insured car to off-camp health providers, physicians, or emergency treatment locationsExpectations, Compensation, and BenefitsAvailable and on-site for the dates of the full summer session including staff pre-season training and post-camp: June 13 - August 3Available to periodically support pre-camp Leadership Team activities covering the following areas: Onboarding, Medical Forms Review, and Pre-Season Training Development.Room and board included on-site at our campus with access to state-of-the-art athletic facilities, providing a seamless and immersive nursing experience.The AC compensation package is competitive and is commensurate with skills and experience. Compensation for a full summer commitment is $10,000, includes room and board, and offers the opportunity to grow with Academy Camps as our presence expands regionally and nationally.The Camp Nurse Teams consist of a Head Nurse and 3 full-time nurses. Every nurse works 28-35 hours per week and 9 total on-call shifts per summer.
