Description

This position combines on-the-job experience and mentorship to help prepare individuals for a career in engineering. This position assists Engineering Department staff in advanced technical and administrative work related to department operations including streets and sidewalks, stormwater, administration, and environmental services. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Engineer II.

Essential Job Functions

  • Performs field and remote inspections of commercial and residential facilities for compliance with Town of Leland standards and ordinances.
  • Assists with the review of drawings for compliance with appropriate building codes and ordinances.
  • Assists with stormwater permit application processing.
  • Assists other departments with Town-wide planning, design, and construction issues.
  • Adheres to policies and procedures established by the Town.
  • Promotes and demonstrates organizational culture, core values, and leadership philosophies consistent with, or complementary to, Town administration.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must be currently enrolled in 2 or 4-year degree program or have relevant work experience.
  • Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the State of North Carolina.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Some completed coursework leading to a degree in engineering.
  • General knowledge of the principles and practices of civil engineering.
  • Ability to prepare technical reports.
  • Ability to perform mathematical and engineering computations with precision.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to perform work during emergency or disaster situations upon request and as assigned by management.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with consultants, elected officials, engineers, architects, contractors, developers, management, and the general public.
  • Ability to apply servant leadership principles and the Town's core values in the performance of duties.

Physical Requirements

This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 10 pounds of force; work regularly requires speaking or hearing, frequently requires sitting, and occasionally requires standing, walking, and using hands to finger, handle or feel; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work occasionally requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions; work is generally in a moderate noise location (e.g. business office with copiers/printers, light traffic).
