Cardiac Surgical ICU Unit Description: 20 Bed cardiac surgical ICU Nurses handle 1-2 patients on this unit based on acuity level. Nurses provide service to any patients that have undergone open heart surgeries such as CABG, Valve repair or replacement, aneurysm repair, TAVR, ablations, Heart Transplantation, and Mechanical Circulatory Support devices including the Total Artificial Heart and Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO), and various lung surgeries. Nurses manage critically ill patients that require intensive hemodynamic monitoring, mechanical ventilation, multiple drug infusions, IABP therapy and CRRT. Experience: 1 year of Intermediate - Stepdown level of care with cardiac knowledge, or 2 years of Medical/Surgical experience. Education: Diploma RN, associate degree RN, bachelors degree RN, or masters degree RN. All Direct Care RNs are required to have BLS within 90 days of hire and ACLS within 1 year of hire. Virginia RN License Virginia or Compact/Multi-State Eligible. Nurse Transition to Practice Program: At Sentara, we are committed to ensuring our nurses thrive from the very beginning of their journey. To support this, all nurses new to critical care will participate in our comprehensive 12-week Transition to Practice program. This program is designed to blend practical skills with hands-on training, professional development, and mentorship, equipping you with the confidence and expertise needed to excel in your critical care nursing career. Our Transition to Practice program features a mix of classroom teaching methodologies and a preceptor-based unit orientation. You will engage in 8 sessions that include live simulations, case studies, and problem-based learning. These sessions cover essential topics such as critical care patient assessment and documentation, respiratory and cardiac care, vasoactive medications, hemodynamics and invasive monitoring, neurological care, post-operative and procedural care, GI/renal systems, ACLS mega code, sedation, analgesia, neuromuscular blockade, and effective communication with providers and families. Trauma 1 Level Care and Team Culture at Sentara: Sentara Norfolk General Hospital is one of just five Level 1 trauma centers in Virginia. It is home to the Nightingale Regional Air Ambulance, a teaching facility, the regions first Magnet hospital and nationally ranked heart program at the Sentara Heart Hospital. Nurses in a Level 1 trauma center are exposed to the most critically ill and injured patients, often dealing with complex, life-threatening conditions.
