The tasks listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional tasks related to the type of work of the class as necessary.

Enforces all federal and state laws and County ordinances relating to public safety and welfare; performs all duties in compliance with applicable policies, procedures, laws, regulations and standards of safety.

Conducts thorough criminal investigations of assigned cases.

Responds to, secures and takes charge of crime scenes until relieved by superior officer; sketches and/or photographs crime scenes.

Gathers, secures, organizes, examines and analyzes evidence to develop a case; submits evidence to forensic laboratory for analysis as appropriate.

Reviews incident and investigative reports;; develops and follows leads; interviews complainants, victims and witnesses; identifies and interrogates suspects; conducts background investigations, etc.

Seeks, develops and interviews detainees/inmates; maintains intelligence files.

Prepares and serves search warrants; conducts searches and seizures of persons and property.

Apprehends, arrests and detains criminals, suspects and law violators when necessary; follows proper procedures when making arrests. Transports detainees/inmates as required.

Informs superiors of the progress of investigations as required.

Prepares and submits accurate and complete incident and investigative reports; may maintain database(s) of specific crime / investigation information.

Prepares cases for court and submits case files to proper authorities/agencies; provides testimony at hearings and in court as necessary.

Cooperates with prosecutors, judges, attorneys, other law enforcement departments/agencies by conducting and assisting with investigations as needed. Also handles confidential information.
Administers first aid and assists EMTs at emergency scenes as necessary.

Assists victims with various needs and makes service referrals as appropriate; keeps victims informed of case status.

Participates in officer training as required.

Remains abreast of all federal and state laws, and ordinances of the Richland County.

Maintains assigned equipment and vehicles.

Receives and responds to citizen inquiries, complaints and requests for assistance.

Attends periodic training sessions and attends seminars and meetings to keep abreast of current law enforcement trends; maintains required physical fitness and required level of proficiency in the use of firearms.

Remains on call 24 hours per day, seven days per week, for emergency response.

Performs general clerical work as required, including but not limited to preparing reports and records, entering and retrieving computer data, copying and filing documents, answering the telephone, etc.

A high school diploma and experience performing patrol or investigative duties with a public law enforcement agency. .

Must possess or able to obtain Law Enforcement Officer Class 1 and 2 certifications.

Must possess a valid state driver's license.

May be required to obtain other technical or professional certifications as deemed necessary by supervisor.

Requires over two years and up to and including four years of law enforcement experience.

Compensation Range: $24.43 - $39.06
