Household Waste Specialist

This Solid Waste position is responsible for daily operations on and off-site through the county household chemical waste collection programs. The purpose is to assist in the acceptance, preliminary sorting, segregation, and packaging of household chemical waste, along with electronic waste generated from businesses and residents.

Sorts and segregates household chemical waste by appropriate hazard classes following facility-organized procedures. Receives, sorts, inspects, manifests, and disposes of incoming household chemical waste and electronic waste. Identifies unknown materials using supplied testing equipment and ongoing training. Responds and assists in the cleanup of spills that may occur at the Household Chemical Waste (HCW) facility and County-sponsored collection events. Prepares transportation manifests, maintains associated records and makes arrangements with waste disposal contractors for shipment of household chemical waste and electronic waste. Loads and unloads trucks using a forklift, pallet jack, drum dolly, hand truck, and drum clamp attachment along with any other equipment needed to safely achieve this task. Performs weekly safety inspection of the facility searching for safety hazards, non-working lights, spills, broken ventilation equipment, and improper storage or placement of containers. Educates citizens utilizing the facility about various programs offered by the Solid Waste Division through conversation and providing informational brochures prepared by the division. Performs general maintenance and housekeeping at the HCW facility which comprises three buildings and associated parking areas. Performs related work as assigned. Requires any combination of education and experience equivalent to High School graduation or GED equivalent and six months of related experience. Possession of a valid Class B Commercial Learners Permit and an acceptable driving record at time of offer with the ability to obtain a valid Class B CDL within six (6) months of hire date is required. Ability to complete OSHA 24-hour Hazwoper Training and 8-hour Hazwoper training and certification within one (1) year of employment is required. Possession of a Forklift Operator Certificate or ability to obtain within one (1) year of employment is required. This position is safety-sensitive and is subject to Drug and Alcohol Workplace Testing as provided in DOT regulation 49CFR-Parts 40 and/or 382. Knowledge of chemicals, substances, and materials that may be collected from households, and proper handling techniques for safe disposal. Ability to properly operate equipment used for loading and unloading trucks. Skill in the use of all types of hand and power tools. Knowledge of minor equipment repair and maintenance. Ability to communicate effectively; verbally and in written form. Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations and basic clerical and bookkeeping functions. Monday - Friday 8:00AM - 5:00PM, and first Saturday of each month.
