Incumbent serves as Custodian for the Morgan County Maintenance Department, responsible for cleanliness of buildings and equipment, and completing a variety of janitorial and cleaning duties.
DUTIES:
Cleans all assigned areas, such as offices, closets, meeting rooms, hallways, stair wells, entrances, elevators and break areas, including, but not limited to, emptying/cleaning ash trays, dusting, polishing furniture, walls, doors, cleaning floor mats, washing blinds, windows and window sills.
Performs a variety of cleaning activities including mopping, sweeping, dusting, and polishing.
Performs preventive maintenance/repairs procedures on equipment, reporting any necessary repairs or replacements.
Maintains supply inventories, checking stocking levels of all supplies and materials, and orders/replaces material when necessary or required.
Responds to inquiries and resolves complaints addressed by the public or other County employees.
Operates a variety of equipment in performance of duties, including, but not limited to, power washer, floor cleaner, carpet cleaner, vacuum cleaner, shop vac, snow blower, and other equipment as needed.
Ensures proper care and storage of maintenance equipment and cleaning chemicals.
Performs related duties as assigned.
I. SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:
High school diploma or GED
Two (2) years of responsible experience in custodial operations, or equivalent combination of education and experience preferred.
Must be at least 18 years of age.
Ability to meet all department hiring requirements, including passage of a drug test and medical exam.
Working knowledge of and ability to make practical application of Department safety policies and procedures and basic janitorial and sanitation requirements for assigned areas of responsibility.
Knowledge of safety precautions and practices applicable to working with a variety of cleaning chemicals and pesticides, with ability to read and understand equipment manuals and label directions for correct mixing and use of cleaning supplies and/or pesticides.
Working knowledge of maintenance practices, building upkeep, with ability to complete renovations/repairs on buildings and equipment.
Ability to operate a variety of equipment in performance of duties, including, but not limited to, power washer, floor cleaner, carpet cleaner, vacuum cleaner, shop vac, snow blower, push mower, and other equipment as needed.
Ability to physically perform custodial duties, including standing/walking for long periods, lifting objects weighing over 50 pounds, carrying and pushing/pulling objects, reaching, bending, crouching/kneeling, climbing ladders, handling/grasping/fingering objects and hearing mechanical sounds.
Ability to work alone with minimum supervision.
Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with co-workers, other County departments, and the public, including being sensitive to professional ethics, gender, cultural diversities and disabilities.
Ability to comply with all employer and department policies and work rules, including, but not limited to, attendance, safety, drug-free workplace, and personal conduct.
Ability to provide public access to or maintain department information and records according to state requirements.
Ability to read/interpret detailed specifications.
Ability to count/make simple arithmetic additions/subtractions.
Ability to understand, memorize, retain, and carry out written or oral instructions.
Ability to regularly work extended hours, and occasionally work weekends and evenings.
Possession of a valid driver's license and demonstrated safe driving record.
II. RESPONSIBILITY:
Incumbent receives general supervisions with assignments guided by broad policies and/or general objectives. Work priorities and schedules are primarily determined by a flexible, customary routine. Incumbent refers to supervisor when interpretations of departmental policies, programs, expenditures are thought necessary. Incumbent establishes procedures and performance standards and interprets policy. Incumbent has a high degree of flexibility in the job. Work errors are primarily detected or prevented through standard safety procedures or notification from other County personnel or the public.
Incumbent reports directly to the Maintenance Director.
III. PHYSICAL EFFORT:
Incumbent's duties involve standing/walking for long periods, sitting/walking at will, lifting objects weighing over 50 pounds, carrying and pushing/pulling objects, reaching, bending, crouching/kneeling, climbing ladders, working in confined areas, hearing mechanical sounds, close/far vision, color perception, driving, handling/grasping/fingering objects. Strain is not prolonged and effort is exerted for short to moderate periods of time, usually in connection to such duties as mowing lawns and clearing snow/ice from walkways.
IV. WORKING CONDITIONS:
Incumbent performs duties in both indoor and outdoor settings, involving exposure to cleaning chemicals, fumes, dust, dirt,, heights normally associated with maintenance duties, excessive noise, varying weather conditions, extreme temperatures, and slippery surfaces. Safety precautions must be followed at all times to avoid injury to self and others.
Incumbent regularly works extended hours, and occasionally works weekends and evenings.
