Plant Metallurgist / Operations Manager - comm'l heat treatThe Operations Manager/Plant Metallurgist is responsible for sharing with the General Manager, the oversight of all day-to-day operations activities for a three-shift operation and is also responsible for the supervision of all operations employees. This position requires a strong background in operations management as well as a working knowledge of metallurgy. This position provides daily expert technical oversight and project management for the optimization of all material selection and thermal treatment processes for the facility. This role also ensures metallurgical integrity of all products and provides technical expertise and assistance in the resolution of problems associated with the thermal processing of existing and new product. Key Responsibilities: •Assist with product process work instructions and furnace set-ups. •Actively involved with metallurgical evaluation/ examination and writing metallurgical reports on routine processed conforming and non-conforming product. •Ensure that microstructural analysis results conform to relevant specifications and that the microstructures are digitally captured, identified, stored and processed according to work instructions. •Conduct failure investigations, root cause analysis, corrective actions and disposition of all non conforming processed product. •Investigate quality problems as they occur during the heat treatment process and recommend appropriate corrective action •Assist with training of laboratory and heat treatment personnel in the fields of basic heat treat and metallurgical technology. •Actively communicate the need for continuous quality improvement throughout the workforce. •Participate in the development of new processes and quality system improvements. •Perform routine lab testing as assigned. •Ensure that all documentation and certifications comply with company and customer specification requirements and sign such documents as proof of compliance. •Interact with customers as needed to sort out complaints - quality issues - and give metallurgical/ heat treatment advice on material selection and or process application. •Responsible for pricing and supplying customers with quotes as requested. •Generate Purchase Orders as required by operational and maintenance personnel ensuring while quotes are market related and that suppliers are approved vendors. •Ensure that the quality system is maintained and improved if required by market demands to meet customers quality levels •Actively involved in audits and responsible for making all necessary documents available to the audit teams. Last Updated 04.28.2023 •Responsible for implementing and maintaining 5S.•Responsible in ensuring that all operational equipment is calibrated at correct intervals to relevant specifications. •Ensure that our strict safety rules are applied and that all operators and supervisors are trained regularly in accordance with the safety program. •Responsible for the management of preventive and corrective maintenance as well as the planning for equipment upgrades and modifications. •Required to be able to perform PAPP's at all levels and submit correct signed documents in a timely manner. Position Requirements: •3+ years of experience in heat treatment as a heat treat engineer •Degree in Metallurgical Engineering, Material Science or similar •2+ years of experience in materials or metallurgical lab a plus •2+ years of experience in production and personnel management •Familiarity with ASTM, SAE, AMS, CAT, JOHN DEERE specifications relating to mechanical testing and or thermal processing preferred •Hands on experience with gas carburizing, carbonitriding, FNC, induction hardening, hardening and tempering, normalizing, annealing and stress relieving •Experience with the thermal processing of plain carbon steel, low alloy steels, tools steels, stainless steels, grey cast irons and ductile irons
