Job Description The Assistant helps manage Veterans Center operations. This position assists potential, new, and continuing military-connected students, to include Active Duty, Guard, Reserves, separated, Veterans, and their immediate family members. The Assistant initiates, coordinates and guides prevention, intervention, and academic support efforts across multiple campus locations. This position empowers students to overcome challenges, persist, and achieve stated education, military, and professional goals. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Assists in ensuring continued Veterans Center operations in the absence of the Director. Proactively monitors students’ academic progress and other key indicators. Engages individually and collaboratively with others to provide needed student supports. Develops tailored program and other information for (potential) students allowing them to understand education requirements and outcomes and take action. Informs, educates, and bridges faculty and staff knowledge gaps regarding unique needs, training, and supports available to military-connected students. Provides student-centered motivational counseling. Ensures students have a clear understanding of goals and action steps outlined in their education plans. Effectively bridges military and academic experiences to maximize educational goal achievement. Attends work activities or programs as scheduled or assigned. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES: Knowledge of school, VA, DoD, and community services and resources available to military-connected students. Knowledge of MCC programs, supports, and services with the ability to effectively provide information to students and ensure understanding. Knowledge of military culture and the impacts military duty has on students and families. Empathize and effectively communicate with military-connected students, while respecting their experiences. Proficient computer skills with the ability to learn new software. Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and other college supported systems. Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail. Ability to work with a diverse population of students, including those with physical and mental disabilities while maintaining composure when working in difficult situations. Ability to work well with minimal supervision in a team-oriented environment. Ability to demonstrate cooperation and professionalism while maintaining patience and understanding in stressful situations. Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality, tact, and respect at all times. Ability to effectively work and interact with various cultures and ethnicities.
