Sustainability and Landscape Coordinator

Piper Shores is Maine's only nonprofit Continuing Care Retirement Community, perched along the shoreline of Casco Bay and located on 180 acres of mixed-use land, including 100 acres of conserved property. This is a newly developed position which will play a pivotal role in the implementation of Piper Shore's sustainability efforts and strategies and is an exciting opportunity for an individual with a passion for environmental responsibility, ecologically friendly landscaping practices, and who is experienced in data collection and analytics.
Essential Job Duties:
- Serves as liaison to the Piper Shores Sustainability Collaborative and serves as co-facilitator of the Collaborative (and other special interest groups) to drive organizational change within the functional areas of the current Sustainability Plan.
- Develops and tracks progress toward sustainability goals as outlined within the Sustainability Plan.
- Evaluates and revises the Sustainability Plan based on timelines established by the Collaborative and the Director of Plant Operations.
- Conducts an annual transportation survey to gather information about resident and staff travel behaviors, preferences, challenges and concerns.
- Performs an annual infrastructure waste audit to optimize and standardize waste sorting, collection and disposal practices.
- Performs regular audits to assess the environmental impact of operations, identifying areas for improvement and proposing actionable solutions.
- Prepares and presents sustainability reports, detailing achievements, challenges, and future objectives to management and stakeholders.
- Engages with external stakeholders such as vendors, government agencies, community organizations, and the public to promote sustainability initiatives.
- Tracks resident issues and suggestions related to sustainability that will enable Plant Operations Management team to identify major problems or trends.
- Works closely with departments across the organization to integrate sustainability practices into day-to-day operations, including residents and staff.
- Assists in creating internal and external communications about sustainability efforts, successes, and future goals, including reports, newsletters, and social media.
- Researches and makes recommendations for best practices within the area of sustainable landscaping.
- Manages plant installations consistent with ecological principles and in accordance with Piper Shores Master Landscape plans.
- Inputs/Processes/Closes work orders as required for landscape services.
- Maintains files, creates supporting documents, manages and responds to email, creates tracking spreadsheets, and prepares communications; may be responsible for processing invoices for landscaping services.
- Serves as a liaison for landscaping vendors and other external stakeholders.
- Assists residents with landscaping inquiries.
- Ensures all safety precautions and procedures are followed while performing duties.
- Performs property inspections as directed by the Director of Plant Operations, Maintenance, and Security.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science or Studies, Landscape Architecture, Horticulture or related field preferred. College coursework and work experience equivalent accepted.
- Professional experience within landscaping, horticulture or environmental science required.
- Passion for sustainability, organic practices, and environmental preservation along with a desire to translate that passion to inspire and motivate others.
- Experience tracking and analyzing data points and using data to make recommendations.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills required.
- Intermediate or advanced use of MS Office suite and data analytic software/programs required.
- Strong communication skills with a comfort in presenting to small and large groups.
- Ability to work independently as well as with a team.
- A valid driver's license with a clean driving record
- Ability to understand and follow instructions in English and to communicate verbally and in written English.
- Able to work independently and as a team.
- Minimum two years of experience in general landscape management.
