Essential Duties and Responsibilities

This full-time, non-exempt position is responsible for the management of design engineering for electrical carbon products manufactured by Helwig Carbon Products, Inc. Other duties may be assigned as management deems necessary.

To develop into a technical leader for carbon brush part specifications. Maintain and improve a large database developed over decades.
  • Review and understand customer inputs for electrical carbons (brushes). Recommend optimum design by applying technical principles and by using experience. Analyze electrical, mechanical, environmental and operating conditions to develop recommendations to meet customer needs of optimal product performance, life, or cost.
  • Work closely with customers, customer service, R&D staff, quality, sales representatives, and other department personnel to develop and ensure manufacturability of all carbon brush products while adhering to all customer requirements.
  • Answer customer phone calls relating specifically to these technical areas.
  • Initiate ECO's (Engineering Change Orders) as needed and maintain proper documentation for change.
  • Respond to the customer concerns, issues and questions on applications by troubleshooting of the design. Provide application assistance and reports. Document all correspondence when needed.
  • Respond to internal and external customers within the timeframe set by supervisors in a fast-paced environment with multiple projects.
  • Improve old specifications for design, function and manufacturability improvements.
  • Work hand-in-hand with design and production employees to satisfy customer product needs and identify feasible product solutions.
  • Participate in design review meetings and recommend design solutions for electrical carbons as necessary. This position is responsible for the electrical carbon design review process, and to ensure that product designs are functional, standardized and manufacturable, and that all customer requirements are considered and agreed upon prior to accepting the order.
  • Assist customers by providing procedures in product installation.
  • Establish policies, procedures, databases etc. to maintain the integrity of all electrical carbon design engineering data. Monitor designs, product specifications and detail drawings to ensure accuracy and timely production.
  • Work cooperatively with other management personnel to effectively address customer issues, internal non-conformances, and product returns. Work hand-in-hand with Production Management, Industrial Engineering, and Quality to develop and maintain manufacturing processes, procedures, and controls that support electrical carbon product technologies and established customer specifications.
  • Maintain Application Database (Survey Documentation) and Technical E-library. Implement improvements for better utilization.
  • Work closely with Quality Control, Human Resources and other departments as required, to ensure compliance with all laws, governmental regulations and ISO 9000-2000.
  • Represent Engineering in various departmental meetings and resolve issues in a positive manner with clear communication.
Education and/or Experience
  • Minimum 2 years of Technical Course or equivalent
  • Two to four years of previous manufacturing experience
  • Knowledge of carbon brushes or electro-mechanical products preferred
  • Preferred but not required: Bachelor's degree (B.S.) in Electrical engineering/Mechanical Engineering or equivalent, or 4-10 years of related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Working knowledge of reading Engineering Drawings with accuracy, Geometrical Dimensioning and Tolerances (GDT) and implementing changes in system with attention to details
  • Working knowledge of recognized Quality Management Standards, i.e., ISO
