UIC is seeking an Infrastructure Systems Administrator to join our Student Affairs Technology team. This role will work under minimal supervision, and has lead responsibility for server and workstation support lifecycles, including imaging and patching using InTune and JAMF Pro, Apple School Manager, and Endpoint management/response using Lansweeper, Microsoft Defender, and Splunk/Qualys. This position is responsible for management of software and services directly supporting the units within Student Affairs. Position has shared responsibility for Microsoft infrastructure, including AD, and virtual/on-premises servers. Primary server administrator for data center hardware and virtual servers serving Student Affairs and its units. Ensures devices are backed up, and that backup data is verified and able to be restored. Provides and maintains departmental file storage resources. Utilizes Microsoft Defender and Qualys to address security vulnerabilities. Provides project management for large-scale IT implementations. Is available for on-call or off-hours work as needed.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Serve as a technology consultant and innovator for Student Affairs staff and departments.
- Installation and configuration of workstations, servers, and mobile devices.
- Maintain patching, security, remediation, backups, and other endpoint management of workstations and servers.
- Maintain critical administrative infrastructure, including file, print, web, database servers, and specialized vendor applications.
- Development and implementation of migration plans for major software version upgrades and replacing outdated technologies with new and current technologies.
- Provide support to service desk operations by providing application and desktop training and support to service desk members, as well as unit customers/FTE.
- Work within defined policies and procedures to solve user or system problems with originality and/or ingenuity, utilizing scripting technologies and scheduled tasks.
- Identifies problems to be solved and escalates appropriately.
- Implementation of system and data security best practices.
- Identification and remediation of security concerns.
- Engagement of Security resources for reporting, monitoring, and resolution of unit security concerns.
- SSL certificate issuance and renewal.
- Participate in and support software development projects, from conception through testing, implementation, and documentation.
- Authors and maintains relevant documentation relating to infrastructure, hardware, passwords, certificates, scripts, and OU groups, and dependencies.
- Manage day-to-day office operations. Interview, hire, orient, lead, mentor and evaluate staff to meet departmental and organizational needs.
- Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.
- Completes assigned individual projects with durations of 2-6 months.
- Completes most work with limited supervision, appropriately judging when to see assistance or guidance from subject experts or management
- Bachelor Degree within Computer Science or closely related field of study
- Minimum 1 year of professional IT experience within System Administration & Operations which includes demonstrated experience in configuration, installation, maintenance, backup / recovery and upgrading multi-user computer systems hardware and software as well as establishing/managing user accounts.
- Demonstrated experiencewith centralized patching, configuration profile deployment and app deployment(including InTune AutoPilot/JAMF Pro).
Preferred Qualifications:
- Knowledge of University network platforms, Mac/Windows computer devices, information technologies, and software applications.
- Experience in Microsoft Server management is required. Including knowledge of Active Directory, Powershell, and related Server management tasks. A basic understanding of SQL and data operations. A basic understanding of SSH, VMware, Lansweeper, Splunk, Defender, Qualys, Azure and AWS.
- Ability to design and coordinate the lifecycle of hardware from the purchase to the installation of personal computers and peripherals, troubleshooting hardware and software problems. Ability to build reports. Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
