PURPOSE OF POSITION: To provide safe and effective patient care. Actively participates in the training and education of residents from UPMC Hamot and Western Reserve Hospital Otolaryngology-Head Neck Surgery Programs. Makes significant contributions to clinical service of the Division of Pediatric Otolaryngology/Audiology at Akron Children's Hospital. Demonstrates a commitment to clinical scholarship through participation in clinical research and publication. Contributes to the service/administrative activities of the Division based on needs of the division in alignment with candidate's interest, experience, expertise, and needs of the division as agreed upon with Division Director. Representative Responsibilities: Patient Care: Provide safe, effective, evidence-based, and compassionate patient care commensurate with the level of advancement and clinical specialty. Make significant contributions to clinical service as evidenced by expertise in clinical care. Develop and maintain local and regional recognition by peers and patients as an authority in the field. Develop a wide local and regional referral base for subspecialists. Develop clinical skills or programs that are local or regionally distinctive. Apply clinical skills that are clinically sound, effective and achieve exceptional patient outcomes. Provide consultative services to other physicians and clinical providers within Akron Children's Hospital to establish a coordinated care plan for each patient. Integrate innovative approaches to patient care. Serve in a role in establishing the clinical direction of the specific clinical field. Provide disease-specific expert consultation relative to area of specialty. Make decisions regarding patient care, including initial screening, assessment, diagnosis, prognosis, care, reassessment, and discontinuation of care. Monitor appropriateness of therapeutic management and care. Promote patient care outcomes on an ongoing basis. Participate in division peer review process and continuous improvement projects in the division. Teaching and Training: Play an important role in teaching and clinical training of medical students who choose ENT as an elective or sub-internship from Northeast Ohio Medical School. Teach in ambulatory and operative settings for ENT residents who rotate at Akron Children's from affiliate programs, as well as pediatric residents from Akron Children's Hospital who choose ENT as an elective. Supervise the patient care of assigned residents and students. Monitor team-based care to assure care provided is safe and effective. Contribute to patient rounding as appropriate based on clinical needs of patients. Ongoing recognition as an excellent teacher, role model and mentor; assume an important or lead role in a major teaching or clinical training program; invited to participate in local and regional educational opportunities; participate in and may lead the development or direction of educational program, curricular offerings and teaching materials; participate in curriculum committee or other education related committees. Serve as a role model within the division in mentoring students and trainees. Serve as consultant to all other faculty and community physicians. Maintain currency in field through continuing education, literature, and seminars. Service and/or Administration: Participate in program development for service and/or administration as evidenced by one of the following: make significant contributions to the development of unique programs for patient care in a variety of potential or existing multidisciplinary clinical programs, and/or specific patient populations; or take a significant role in leading a novel clinical complex pediatric otolaryngology multidisciplinary program; or provide consultation on a specific program development; or significant participation in performance improvement programs or on divisional, departmental, or Medical Staff committees (i.e. RPT, IRB); participate in local or regional clinical affairs through membership in professional societies or specialty governing boards. Provide faculty coverage as needed within the division for call and all inpatient/ED needs. May take a role in the development of division and/or hospital-based ENT specific policies, procedures, and standards. Promote interpersonal and intrapersonal relationships and encourage team concepts. Assist in the development and implementation of long- and short-term goals and objectives and ensure that they are appropriate to the Division. Complete evaluations for students, residents, and peers. Scholarly Activity: Participate in scholarly activities as evidenced by publication of clinical investigation, clinical observations, peer reviews for journals, chapters, or books; participation in clinical trials, and/or clinical investigations; reviews manuscripts. Apply advanced training in research methods to design and conduct clinical research on various areas of clinical specialty. Develop research programs in the area of clinical specialty. Publish and/or co-author findings and conclusions resulting from research in a timely fashion. Submit abstracts and present at national meetings of pediatric otolaryngology such as SENTAC, ASPO, ACIA, and/or other relevant national society meetings. Assist in the design and implementation of programs which evaluate the efficacy of treatment. Recommend approaches for improvement activities, recommend, and perform new processes, collect, and measure data, develop processes based on performance and communication results. Qualifications: Education/Experience Required: Medical Degree (MD/DO) or their equivalent. Current active medical license issued by the State of Ohio or eligible for license. Appropriate medical credentialing through the Medical Staff Services offices for both CCHMC and ACH. Completion of all required pre-employment activities. Assistant or Associate Professor appointment or eligibility required. For Associate Rank, generally requires a minimum of five years of service at the Assistant Professor rank. Preferred: Board certification in Complex Pediatric Otolaryngology. Unique Skills: Knowledge of growth and development. Family-centered care; understands and supports family-centered care and shared decision making. Professional knowledge and clinical ability sufficient to provide evaluation and treatment of complex patients in one or more specialty areas. Knowledge of pathophysiology and pharmacology. Knowledge and skill in patient and/or family education. Understanding and showing respect and appreciation for the uniqueness of all individuals; leveraging differences in others' perspectives and ideas; appreciating cultural differences and adjusting one's approach to successfully integrate with others who are different from oneself. Strong organizational and project management skills to manage projects independently. Excellent verbal, written and/or interpersonal communication skills.
