Overview: Savannah River Mission Completion is seeking a Principal Engineer - Structural Mechanicsto be based in our Aiken, SC location on the Savannah River Site. The Structural Mechanics Engineer (Principal Engineer) in the Design Services organization implements solutions to engineering challenges to meet standards set by the Department of Energy (DOE) for the Savannah River Mission Completion (SRMC) project. Responsibilities: Supervise a group of 10-15 engineering professionals performing advanced structural and mechanical analyses Responsible for advanced structural analyses of various structures to validate its design adequacy for normal operation and accident loading conditions. Advanced structural analyses include:Seismic Soil-Structure Interaction (SSI) Dynamic seismic analysis (response spectra and time-history) Development of infrastructure seismic response spectra Evaluation of structural responses for tornado winds, missile penetration, precipitation (rain, flood, snow), seismic activity and explosions (blast/detonation and deflagration) Responsible for advanced engineering evaluations employing:stress analysis, solid and fluid mechanics principles, and heat transfer phenomena to validate the design adequacy of various equipment for normal operation and various accident event conditions hand computations and computer software including finite element analysis for linear and non-linear components, pipe stress, fluid flow, and pressure vessel deisng component design requiring capability to evaluate component structural responses due to thermal-hydraulic pressure transients, vibration, other live loads, wind loads, and seismic events design evaluation tasks to determine pressure relief valve size requirements for fluid systems, and pump size requirements for piping networks Other duties as assigned Qualifications: BS Degree in Mechanical, Civil, or Structural Engineering with relevant professional engineering experience Qualifications: Professional Engineers (PE) License in above listed discipline Working knowledge of STAAD, ANSYS, ABAQUS, SASSI, DYNA3D, AUTOPIPE, ANSYS, PVElite, COMPRESS, or similar computer codes Working knowledge of Codes and Standards including IBC, AISC (ASD, LRFD, & N690), ASCE, ACI (318 & 349), ASME VIII, ASME III, API-579, ASME B31, NFPA-13, SMACNA, and ASME AG-1 Knowledge of advanced engineering principles and practices to develop appropriate outputs 5 years leadership experience of highly motivated engineering professionals Experience with monitoring and controlling work to meet approved budgets and schedules Good organizational and communication skills. Provides clear scope definition and technical direction to subordinates In-depth knowledge of the conventional technology in the specialized field, computer applications, Industry Codes and Standards, design control, and Department of Energy requirements Expresses ideas concisely and clearly, both orally and in writing Accepts responsibility for own actions and commitments and those of his or her subordinates; takes ownership of his or her job Works well in an environment of multiple demands and shifting directions and priorities Ability to perform field walk-downs.
