Position: Residence Life & Housing Graduate Assistant

Status: Part-time, (20hrs/week)

Department: Student Life

Reports to: Director of Residence Life & Housing

Start Date: Fall Semester 2024

Compensation: Stipend, Room, and Tuition

Description:

As a full-time graduate student, the Graduate Assistant (GA) works under the supervision of the Director of Student Life & Housing. The GA is primarily responsible for providing support to residents by serving as a resource and assisting with student concerns. The GA also provides administrative support, serves in emergency on-call rotation, and is required to live on-campus.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Student Engagement & Community Development
  • Be accessible to students and their concerns through regular student contact, acting as a referral agent when appropriate.
  • Serve as a resource and role model to students.
  • Serve in a 24-hour crisis response rotation and be available after hours (beyond 8am to 4pm) to respond to critical incidents on campus.
Crisis & Conflict Management
  • Communicate and enforce College's policies and Residence Life regulations to students.
  • Serve in the on-call rotation for the campus.
  • Document violations of College policy and Residence Life regulations.
  • Report emergencies and life-threatening incidents to appropriate College personnel.
  • Assist with conflict resolution process amongst residents & arrange roommate agreements when necessary.
  • Provide support to residents for minor issues/concerns, roommate conflicts, room changes, etc.
  • Respond appropriately to crisis situations as outlined during summer training.
  • Maintain documentation of incident reports of all resident behaviors that conflict with College policy and/or the regulations of Residence Life.
  • Assist with on-call emergencies in the residence hall and respond appropriately to crisis situations.
Facilities & Housing Management
  • Assist with all residence hall opening and closing procedures.
  • Assist with the housing assignment processes and the maintenance of room occupancy data.
  • Assist with management and follow-up of maintenance/facilities concerns.
Supervision & Development
  • Assists with supervision and development of a team of Resident Assistants (RA's) by facilitating professional development opportunities and managing performance against job responsibilities.
  • Participate in professional development programs including RA meetings, conferences, and training sessions.
  • Attends hall team meetings.
  • Act as a team player and present a positive and enthusiastic attitude.
  • Assist with Resident Assistant supervision including one on one meetings.
  • Lead professional development component of hall team meetings at least once per month at the direction of DSLH.
Department & University Responsibilities
  • Assist Residence Life with special events and functions (e.g. summer training, open houses, registration, programming, etc.).
  • Provide administrative support for the Director of Residence Life & Housing.
  • Perform 20 office hours per week in the Graduate Assistant office located in the Student Center.
  • Consult with Director of Student Life & Housing regularly to discuss any concerns, programs, and events occurring within the residence hall.
  • Disseminate information about Residence Life and College events and policies through individual interaction, postings, floor meetings, etc.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Residence Life & Housing
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree from a four-year institution and enrollment in Paul Smith's College Master's degree programs.
  • Ability to work with a broad range of diverse individuals and groups to form a safe and inclusive campus community.
  • Strong communication and relationship building skills.
  • Ability to work independently and with others as part of the Division of Student Affairs.
  • Ability to work evening and weekends as needed. •Excellent data management skills, including computer and paper files.
  • Must have previous experience in Student Life, Residence Life or Student Affairs from their undergraduate degree.
  • Must be flexible, discreet, and considerate of others' needs.
  • Must have a positive and innovative outlook on the position.
  • Must have the ability and desire to work with students.
