Pharmacy Technician Brigham and Womens Hospital Job Summary Under the direction of a staff pharmacist and/or pharmacy leadership team, follow established policies and procedures to perform a variety of routine support tasks that are integral to the operation of the pharmacy department. Tasks include, but are not limited to, preparing and distributing unit-dose medications, outpatient prescriptions, and stock orders while maintaining the safe handling and integrity of medications. Tasks may also include responsibilities of technical training and participation in departmental projects. Staffing assignments will include roles throughout the central pharmacy and designated specialized pharmacy areas. For Uncertified Pharmacy Technicians, certification is preferred within the initial six (6) months of employment and must be obtained before the end of that timeframe. Essential Functions Perform all required pharmaceutical dosage calculations necessary to prepare extemporaneous dosage forms under direct supervision of a pharmacist. Adhere to safety requirements for handling non-hazardous medications in accordance with organizational policies and regulatory requirements. May prepare compounded sterile products, distribute controlled substances, or maintain code cart inventory as needed. Assist in training Pharmacy Technician Trainees. Familiarize with pharmacy practice settings, legal requirements, prescription information, drug identification, packaging, labeling, and proper drug handling and storage practices. Qualifications Education: High School Diploma or Equivalent required. Licenses and Credentials: Pharmacy Technician [State License] - Generic - HR Only required; Pharmacy Technician Certification [CPhT] - Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) preferred. Experience Previous hospital-related experience, formal training, or certification from a pharmacy technician training program desired. 12 years required. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Perform intermediate mathematical calculations associated with preparing non-sterile, extemporaneously manufactured pharmaceutical products and other medication doses. Follow all applicable state and federal controlled substance regulations. Continuously improve skills necessary for area-specific technology, including robotics, automation, software, equipment, and information systems. Read, interpret, and follow complex verbal and written instructions to prepare medications accurately in a sterile environment.
