Responsibilities The Department of Pediatrics at the Frederick P. Whiddon College of Medicine at the University of South Alabama is recruiting a BC/BE physician in Pediatric Hematology Oncology to further enhance resident and medical student education in the outpatient setting. The Department of Pediatrics at USA Health serves as the primary pediatric referral center for the region. Duties include patient care at USA Health Children's and Women's Hospital. Providing a quality educational and training experience for the medical students and residents at our institution is an important and prominent departmental goal. Duties include: TEACHING: Didactic classroom lectures and grand rounds for medical students, pediatric residents, faculty, and nursing staff. Teach pediatric medicine within the prescribed curriculum at the Frederick P. Whiddon College of Medicine. Prepare and deliver lectures to medical graduate students. Instruct graduate medical students using various teaching methods, such as lecture and demonstration. Compile bibliographies of specialized teaching materials for outside reading assignments. TEACHING (CLINICAL): Clinical teaching in the Pediatric Hematology Oncology clinic and inpatient wards for pediatric residents, nurses, medical students, physician assistant students, and pharmacy students. Instruct and guide the pediatric hematology oncology team (nurses, pharmacists, social workers, and laboratory personnel) in managing the patients admitted to the pediatric hematology oncology service. This includes reviewing disease characteristics; therapy strategy; performance of pediatric procedures, like bone marrow aspiration, bone marrow biopsy, lumbar puncture and chemotherapy administration. Instruct and guide the pediatric residents on an evidence-based approach to diagnosis and management of patients regarding disease as well as treatment related outcomes. MEDICAL RESEARCH: Direct medical students and pediatric residents in research planning and execution while working for advanced academic degrees. Mentor and teach these students principles of ethical and productive techniques involved in medical research. Conduct research in the field of pediatric hematology oncology medicine to better understand the disease pathology, complications, and therapeutic outcomes in children. To develop new treatments for the hematology oncology patient population so as to achieve a decrease in the death rate and complications of severe illness in children. To present research data at national and international meetings and publish findings in professional journals. CLINICAL CARE OF PATIENTS: Diagnose and treat children with critical illnesses such as cancer-leukemia, lymphoma, brain tumors, kidney tumors etc., sickle cell disease, hemolytic anemia, thrombocytopenia and neutropenia related life-threatening infections. Examination of pediatric patients to determine presence of disease, order and execute laboratory and radiographic testing, analyze the results of testing, analyze reports and findings to diagnose condition. Administer and prescribe treatments and drugs in the critically ill pediatric population. Educate families on prophylactic and therapeutic care of their sick child. To give anticipatory guidance regarding care of a sick child on chemotherapy or on repeated blood transfusion therapy. ADMINISTRATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES: Ensure organization and structure in the pediatric hematology oncology administrative division, outpatient patient management care as well as inpatient organization so as to effectively and efficiently provide the best possible health care service to patients. Help establish and run a sickle cell registry for the local population. Be involved with multidisciplinary committees at USA Health Children's and Women's Hospital. Work at the level of the Department of Pediatrics and the Whiddon College of Medicine on various teams and committees that determine research and education policy and procedure.
