**Senior Pilot Manufacturing Engineer**

????Manufacturing????Fremont, California?? ID116962???? **The Role| Senior Pilot Manufacturing Engineer**

The Cell Manufacturing Engineering team at Tesla is looking to add a highly motivated Manufacturing Engineer responsible for the design, development and ramp up of pilot scale cell manufacturing equipment for scaling-up Teslas cutting-edge Lithium-ion batteries. The pilot program enables Teslas engineers to experiment, iterate, and optimize the cell manufacturing processes while continuously improving the functionality and throughput of the battery manufacturing equipment. The battery cell is one of the most complex components designed and manufactured at Tesla. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the manufacturing of Teslas next generation, large form factor, high capacity lithium-ion batteries.

The ideal candidate for this role will be able to execute each stage from concept to commission of new pilot equipment. This includes experiment design and execution, data analysis, equipment specification, vendor interactions, design of landing space, Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), installation, commissioning, Site Acceptance Testing (SAT), and finally equipment roll-out to production. The candidate in this role must be capable of collaborating across multiple teams, both in-house and external to Tesla to execute the project at hand. In addition to supporting equipment installations across Teslas manufacturing facilities, the candidate will have an opportunity to develop, test, and roll out wide range of fixturing and/or processes to production.

Tesla has a highly demanding and fast-paced environment where the candidate will work on critical systems of an incredibly exciting product. The ideal candidate must also possess excellent analytical and organizational skills, and a well-practiced attention to detail.

If you enjoy and thrive in a fast paced, continuously changing environment, please apply.

**Responsibilities:**

* Drive ramp of new pilot line by characterizing baseline performance and capability of each system, and drive actions to maintain or improve performance as measured by product quality and tool availability.

* Analyze production with statistical software (JMP or R preferred) to understand manufacturing uptime, availability, and reliability metrics (e.g., yield, OEE, cycle time, quality), and investigate bottlenecks to identify root cause and countermeasure to maximize throughput.

* Drive root cause analysis through process and equipment expertise, derive and execute DoEs accordingly, and correlate with upstream/downstream processes.

* Troubleshoot and recover processes by PLC, HMI, or tool management software, and implement changes/improvements.

* Ensure manufacturing lines meet uptime, availability and reliability metrics.

* Actively use tool data sources to quantitatively evaluate and track tool performance and create programs to improve relevant metrics.

* Work independently and with vendors to understand root cause of failures, propose design or component changes, and implement/validate equipment modifications.

* Develop and deliver training to operations and maintenance technicians to ensure seamless handoff of new equipment.

* Generate and maintain documentation including machine and process specifications, drawings, BOM, spare parts, PFMEA, control plan, process flow chart.

* Own individual workstations, tools, or production lines.

**Requirements:**

* Either a BS with 5+ years relevant experience or an MS in mechanical engineering, manufacturing engineering, or equivalent.

* Evidence of exceptional ability.

* 5 or more years of experience in a production environment and/or proven manufacturing development track record.

* A passion to implement and work on ramping a manufacturing line including experience with mechanical automation equipment, robots, design of electromechanical systems, PLCs, motion controls.

* Position will offer unique and complex engineering challenges that require persistence, innovative thinking and a positive attitude.

* Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment, occasionally requiring extended hours and travel.

* Proven ability to operate under pressure while managing multiple priorities simultaneously.

* Experience with semi-automated / automated manufacturing equipment a plus.

* Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.

* Aptitude to learn and incorporate new technologies.
