As an early stage company, Bestomer is remote with a strong preference for in-person collaboration in the Los Angeles and San Francisco areas. We are in the earliest days of our journey and every incoming teammate will have immeasurable impact.
How We Interview:
Bestomer likes to get to know you on a human level before we dive into role specific details. You’ll first meet with a member of our team so we can learn about what motivates you and so you can learn about the ambitious problem we’re solving and the work required to get us there. From there (if we think there’s Bestie potential brewing), you’ll meet with a member of the team you’ll be working on. Technical roles require a bit more speed dating and you may be asked to complete a technical skill assessment or code review as part of the process. If there’s magic after all of that, we’ll politely ask if you’d like to join us on this journey.
About the Role:
As part of the Core Engineering team, you will be focused on the foundation of the Bestomer platform and responsible for developing server-side APIs, and designing and architecting system infrastructure that processes and serves massive amounts of data in a dynamic manner.
As a Core Engineer, you will be designing, developing, and maintaining high-quality applications, taking full, end-to-end ownership, including writing test cases, setting up monitoring, etc. You will also participate in code reviews and provide constructive feedback, as well as ensuring that code coverage is sufficient to guarantee a high degree of reliability.
You might be a good fit if you have:
A proven track record of delivering results in a fast-paced, high-growth software engineering environment
Proficiency in Javascript and Python, with experience building scalable server-side architectures. Typescript experience is a bonus, although not strictly required
Passion for taking on new challenges, even if they stretch beyond your formal job description
Expertise designing and optimizing high-performance, large-scale systems
Experience with large-scale ETL and data processing pipelines
Knowledge of reinforcement learning and its applications
Drive to build innovative solutions that positively impact society
Knowledge:
Strong in object-oriented design principles
Knowledge of good asynchronous practices in JS/ES
A very strong command of data structures and algorithms, plus how the JS/ES framework uses them
Sound knowledge of concepts like exception handling, event driven programming, and generics
Experience in writing test cases and proficiency in a test framework of your choice.” …we will prob not really ask about the framework TBH, but we might ask things like “what would you test in this code”, looking for them to explain which pieces would be tested and why, what could be hard about doing this, etc, rather than writing examples of test cases for any particular framework
Good command over any well-known IDE like VSCode, Eclipse, etc. Vim users are always welcome, and maybe even emacs users…
Experience using build and system tools like Git / Github, npm, Conda / virtualenv, Docker, shell scripting, Crontab, Linux init scripts / Systemd, etc.
Experience:
3-5 years experience (strong project related experience and success in similarly relevant roles may be applicable here).
Ability to work in start-up environments where tasks, projects, and daily priorities may and can be ambiguous.
Anticipatory desire to lean ahead and solve problems which are often unknown or unplanned (we’re building this thing from scratch; we don’t know what we don’t know).
Being able to stretch and shrink against shared company and team goals; some days will feel like working at the summit and others at basecamp.
