Responsibilities

Position Summary:

A WIC peer counselor is a paraprofessional support person who gives basic breastfeeding information and encouragement to WIC pregnant and breastfeeding mothers.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Two (2) years recent customer service experience.
  • High school diploma/GED.
  • Attends breastfeeding training classes to become a peer counselor.
  • Work towards attainment of certification as a Certified Lactation Counselor (CLC) or Certified Lactation Educator(CLE) within one year of hire.
  • Must be an active listener and demonstrate compassion for breastfeeding clients.
  • Must attend a series of breastfeeding classes observe outpatient lactation consultants and read assigned books and materials about breastfeeding.
  • Is enthusiastic about breastfeeding and wants to help breastfeeding clients enjoy a positive experience.
  • Has reliable transportation.
  • DRV LIC = Current driver's license

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Be a former or current WIC client with breastfeeding experience.
  • Has breastfed at least one baby (does not have to be currently breastfeeding).
