JOB TITLE: CUSTODIAN
REPORTS TO: BUILDING PRINCIPAL
JOB PURPOSE: To maintain the physical upkeep and cleanliness of school buildings, grounds and furnishings.
Duties, Responsibilities and Accountabilities
1. Sweep, mop, strip and wax all floors; vacuum all rugs.
2. Keeps the building clean and in order.
3. Cleans and disinfects restrooms and replenishes all required supplies.
4. Removes all trash, litter and waste paper from building.
5. Keeps walks and entrance ways free from dirt, trash and snow.
6. Secures building by locking doors and windows.
7. Paints areas assigned by the building Principal and/or the Director of Maintenance.
8. Keeps an assigned building space clean and orderly.
9. Maintains proper care of equipment and materials used in work.
10. Moves furniture, sets up and assembles classroom furniture, makes special furniture arrangements as
designated by the building Principal for special programs and activities of both the school and the
community.
11. Performs any emergency custodial duties arising during the shift or on call-outs.
12. Performs minor building and related equipment maintenance and repair work such as:
a. Replaces burned out light bulbs and fluorescent tubes.
b. Tightens mounting screws and replaces pencil sharpeners, soap and tissue dispensers.
c. Repairs metal hall lockers by straightening and replacing doors; replacing hinges, locks, handles, bolts, rivets, nuts, coat hooks and shelves.
d. Tightens and replaces loose nuts, bolts and screws on doors and hardware and handrails.
e. Unplugs stopped up toilets and urinals with plumbers snake or plunger and have principal call maintenance if additional work may be required.
f. Re-glues or tapes loose carpet and/or floor vinyl.
13. Custodian duties include, but are not limited to the above mentioned duties and other work may be assigned as required.
Requirements:
1. High school diploma.
2. Knowledge of current practices, procedures and techniques used in cleaning, sanitation and preservation of facilities.
3. Knowledge of solvents, cleaning agents and detergents for proper application to appropriate surfaces.
4. Knowledge of safety hazards and preventive maintenance.
5. Able to use cleaning equipment such as electric buffers, floor scrubbers, wet and dry vacuums, shampoos machines, hand tools and other power equipment in the performance of routine cleaning.
6. Able to follow orders and written and oral instructions.
7. Able to work alone or as part of a custodial team.
8. Able to lift 80 pounds; 40 pounds repeatedly.
9. Requires long periods of time walking and working in a physical capacity.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
Mathematical Skill: Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form.
Problem Solving: Can identify and resolve problems in a timely manner. Works well in group problem solving situations. Uses reason even when dealing with emotional topics.
Student Service: Manages difficult or emotional situations in a positive manner. Responds promptly to student needs. Responds to requests for service and assistance and meets commitments.

Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand and talk or hear and sometimes walk and sit. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally push or lift up to 80 lbs. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as to read handwritten or typed material, and the ability to adjust focus. The position requires the individual to meet multiple demands from several people and interact with the public and other staff.
