Mechanical Engineer

Charlestown, United States Catalog.com Full time

CATALOG, a Boston-based pioneering startup, is making significant strides in the field of data storage and computation by harnessing the power of DNA. DNA, known for its millennia-long stability, unrivaled information density, and cost-effective replicability, offers revolutionary potential for latency-tolerant high-density data storage and massively parallel computation.

We are seeking a dynamic Mechatronics Engineer to join our multidisciplinary team. We are pushing the boundaries of science and technology, and you can help make the difference. This position, while guided by the Mechanical Engineering team, will work closely with Biology and Computer Science groups in our quest to develop next-generation DNA writing technology. We're looking for someone who can turn an idea from a brainstorming session into a proof-of-concept test system through background research, project plan development, custom test equipment design, experimental prototype building, code writing for test automation, and experimental data analysis.

In this role, you will:

●      Drive technical projects, transitioning ideas into functional proof-of-concept prototypes, and potentially into fully functional systems. Your leadership and technical acumen will be instrumental in turning our visionary ideas into tangible technologies.

●      Collaborate with the molecular biology and software teams to develop scalable automation tools and hardware. Your cross-disciplinary collaboration skills will be crucial in creating synergies and accelerating our progress.

●      Lead the mechanical, optical, electrical, and control design and integration for prototype devices. Your comprehensive expertise in mechatronics will help us design and build sophisticated, integrated systems.

●      Physically build, wire, and test devices and systems. Your hands-on approach and troubleshooting skills will ensure our prototypes function as designed.

●      Contribute to peer-reviewed articles and patents that communicate CATALOG’s vision and protect its IP. Your innovation and communication skills will help us share our progress and safeguard our intellectual property.

We are looking for someone with experience in the following areas:

●      Proficiency or strong demonstrated experience in SolidWorks or similar software. Experience in COMSOL / CFD is a plus.

●      Proficiency in Python, C/C++, or C#. Your software development skills will enable us to automate and control our systems effectively.

●      Experience working on or leading projects on complex automated devices, electro-mechanical systems, or robotics. Your hands-on experience will guide us in developing our next-generation technologies.

●      Familiarity with microcontrollers. Your deep understanding of these components will support our development of sophisticated, integrated systems.

●      Experience managing system and subsystem requirements. Your ability to define and manage specifications will help us meet our technical objectives.

We are looking for someone with:

●      A BS in Mechatronics, Mechanical, Electrical, or a related engineering field. An advanced degree is a plus. Your academic background will form the foundation of your contributions to our team.

●      A portfolio / webpage / Github examples of past work representative of your skill level and design approach. Your previous work will demonstrate your capabilities and style.

You will also need to be able to:

●      Display a borderline neurotic attention to detail. Your meticulous nature will ensure the quality of our work.

●      Plan and execute independently. Your self-directed approach will help you make progress even when faced with complex challenges.

●      Thrive in a changing but supportive environment. Your flexibility and resilience will enable you to navigate our fast-paced, dynamic landscape.

●      Work collaboratively in small, cross-disciplinary teams. Your teamwork and communication skills will contribute to our collective success.

At CATALOG, we challenge you to think critically, work creatively, and conquer uncharted problems in a groundbreaking field. We believe in building an inclusive team with different points of view. We support and celebrate diversity in our workforce. We offer competitive compensation packages, including medical, dental, and vision insurance, 401(k) with company matching, and unlimited PTO.

Note: Even if you don’t meet all of the requirements listed, we encourage you to apply. Think of it more as looking for most of the items listed, not all.
