Overview:

Working as a Registered Radiation Therapist you will apply ionizing radiation to patients as prescribed by radiation oncologists. Responsible for providing comprehensive care to patients of all ages, through the proper use of ionizing radiation in accordance with established standards, policies, procedures, protocols and guidelines. Embodies the Memorial Health System Performance Excellence Standards of Safety, Courtesy, Quality, and Efficiency that support our mission, vision and values.

**This is a PRN role**

Qualifications:

Education:

  • Must be a graduate of an accredited Radiation Therapy school and be board eligible.
  • Baccalaureate degree preferred.

Licensure/Certification/Registry:

  • Registered Radiation Therapist (ARRT-RT (T)) in good standing or registry eligible. If not otherwise specified by the professional licensing body, the maximum allowable time to practice in a registration pending status is three months.
  • Must hold and maintain current IEMA Radiation Therapy licensure.
  • Maintain current BLS CPR certification.


Responsibilities:
  1. Follows steps to accurately deliver the prescribed course of radiation therapy with minimal supervision.
    • Checks prescription for completeness and signature.
    • Checks diagnosis for the presence of a pathologic report positive for malignancy.
    • Charts are routinely checked for coincidence of current treatment administration with prescriptions. Points checked include:
  • Current total dose with prescribed dose.
  • Daily fractionation checked against prescription.
  • Accuracy of field size against simulation.
  • Appropriateness of immobilization devices against CT simulation (ex. Head holders, masks, arm boards, bite blocks, Alpha-cracles, etc.).
  • Presence or absence of bolus and appropriate choice of bolus (ex. wax, Superflab, etc.), choice of correct thickness.
  • Presence or absence of wedges, choice of correct angle.
  • Accuracy and appropriateness of field changes (ex. photon to electron, addition or deletion of blocks, changes in field size, etc.).
  1. Maintains appropriate and accurate treatment records.
    • Presence of signed and witnessed consent to therapy for 100% of patients before treatment is begun.
    • Appropriate and accurate documentation of all treatment parameters.
    • As appropriate; documentation of items:
  • Current total dose with described dose.
  • Daily fractionation checked against prescription
  • Maintains accuracy of field size against treatment plan.
  • Appropriateness of immobilization devices and against simulation (e.g., head holders, masks, arm boards, bite blocks, Alpha-cradles, etc.).
  • Presence or absence of bolus and appropriate choice of bolus (e.g., wax, Superflap, etc.), choice of correct thickness.
  • Presence or absence of wedges, choice of correct angle.
  • Accuracy and appropriateness of field changes (e.g., photon to electron, addition or deletion of blocks, changes in field size, etc.).
  1. Routinely checks for appropriate verification of aspects of accuracy.
    • All treatment ports are verified weekly 100% of the time. Exceptions are made by physician direction only.
    • Weight loss of greater than 10 pounds will be reported to physician, documented in treatment record and referred to nutrition services 100% of the time.
    • Function of each treatment machine will be verified as accurate according to current policy before daily treatment is begun 100% of the time. Exception is made when function is deemed acceptable for physicist.
    • Follow-up on all no show patients for scheduled treatment will be attempted by techs and documented 100% of the time.
    • Accurately performs Time-Out procedure 100% of time for proper patient verification and safety.
  1. Ability to perform basic dosimetric calculations by hand within 4% of check by computer of physicist second check; able to perform these hand calculations within 10 minutes of being given all relative and pertinent information.

  1. Ability to perform On-Call emergency treatment in conjunction with the Radiation Oncologist as stated in the On-Call Emergency Treatment policy.
  1. If applicable, uses simulation equipment and obtains data required for treatment planning. Performs accurate simulation, including:
    • Positions patient appropriately for area to be treated.
    • Records all information on simulation sheet/printout.
    • Performs contouring as requested.
  1. Consistently performs all required safety checks of equipment and patient treatment set-up, including time out for safe identification and confirmation of treatment site.
  1. Identifies incomplete or inaccurate planning and set-up information and discusses with dosimetrist, physicist or physician as needed.
  1. Promotes hospital Great Patient Experience guest relations.
  1. Promotes efficient effective operation of department including adequate knowledge of order entry system for billing.
  1. Participates in quality improvement initiatives to improve department operations and patient outcomes.
  1. Learns to operate new equipment or new skills needed to keep department operating efficiently.
  1. Performs other duties as assigned.
