Summary:

The individual in this role designs various optical systems or modules and works with R&D scientists, assembly technicians, and test engineers to either develop new or improve existing systems. The work is project-based, and the person in this role owns their project progress against department and company goals and may also mentor colleagues on several such projects.

Responsibilities:

Drive progress towards designing and verifying subsystems or modules per specs.

Document design principle and results.

Build prototypes to verify design specs.

Write assembly and verification instructions.

Other duties as assigned by management.

Qualifications:

Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Optical Engineering, Physics, or related discipline.

Minimum of 5 to 8 years industry experience of designing optical and opto-mechanical systems.

Excellent system-level design skills including Zemax simulation skills, COMSOL simulation skills, and CAD design skills, etc.

Strong hands-on laboratory skills.

Experience leading the design of scientific instruments and apparatus.

Deep domain expertise in the areas of optics, modulators, lasers, electronics, and ultra-high vacuum.

Excellent communication skills, including the highest ability to explain physical reasoning, design decisions, and experimental results.

The individual in this role will have a deep interest in developing and commercializing quantum technologies and is a self-starter with previous experience working in a highly collaborative work environment.
