The Code Compliance Officer inspects residential and non-residential properties and enforces compliance with municipal codes and ordinances related to zoning, public nuisance, property maintenance, public health and environment. The Code Compliance Officer also prepares and issues violation notices, notices to appear in Municipal Court, work orders for abatement action by the City, written reports, memos and correspondence as well as develops and conducts education programs for the public.

A DAY IN THE LIFE:

Conduct Inspections:
•Perform regular and complaint-driven inspections of properties to ensure compliance with local codes, ordinances and state laws related to zoning, public nuisances, property maintenance, public health and environment.
•Examine buildings, structures, and properties to check for adherence to zoning regulations, building codes, and maintenance standards.
•Identify and document code violations such as unsafe structures, unsanitary conditions, and improper land use.
•Record detailed notes and take photographs of violations to support compliance actions.

Issue Notices and Orders:
•Issue notices of violation and orders to comply, outlining specific corrective actions and deadlines.
•Follow up with property owners, tenants, and contractors to ensure violations are resolved.

Enforce Regulations:
•Work with property owners to achieve compliance through education and enforcement.
•Conduct follow-up inspections to verify that violations have been corrected.
•Prepare and issue Notice of Abatement actions.
•Recommend to the Building Official posting of unsafe or vacant structures.
•Prepare cases for legal action when necessary and testify in court regarding code violations.

Engage with the Community:
•Provide information and guidance to the public about code requirements and inspection processes.
•Attend community meetings to address concerns and provide updates on code complaince activities.

Maintain Records and Reports:
•Keep detailed records of inspections, violations, enforcement actions, and correspondence.
•Prepare reports on inspection activities, compliance rates, and trends for supervisors and community leaders.

Collaborate with Other Departments:
•Work with other municipal departments, such as planning, public works, and police, to address code compliance issues.
•Participate in team meetings and contribute to developing policies and procedures for effective code enforcement.

WHAT YOU'LL NEED FOR SUCCESS:

• Education: A high school diploma or equivalent required; associate degree or higher in a related field is preferred.
• Experience: At least 2 years of experience in code enforcement, housing inspection, or a related field is preferred.
• Certifications/Licenses: Certification by the International Code Council as a Property Maintenance and Housing inspector preferred or shall be obtained within 12 months from date of hire. Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License with an acceptable driving record.
