About The Role The Sr. Manager, Cost Accounting, is responsible for overseeing and managing the cost accounting/inventory function within the organization. This role will serve as a “key player” in centralizing the inventory/cost accounting activities of a diversified group of subsidiaries and develop processes and internal controls to support efficiencies and promote the safeguarding of assets across the organization. The Sr. Manager, Cost Accounting will manage a cost accountant, provide strategic insights to support critical business decisions and work cross-functionally to ensure accurate financial reporting and inventory accounting. Responsibilities This Sr. Manager, Cost Accounting position will be responsible for all cost accounting and inventory activities such as accurate product costing, overhead calculations, variance analysis, and transaction support. Assist the Company with centralizing its inventory/cost accounting activities for all subsidiaries which currently operate on a standalone basis. Design and implement effective inventory controls and process improvements across the organization. Develop new, robust processes to drive productivity in the cost accounting/inventory function. Assist with creating processes to ensure accuracy of work orders, SKU setup, BOM creations, inventory write-offs, inventory valuation and reconciliation, etc. Ensure accurate and timely recording of inventory transactions. Manage, coordinate and/or conduct periodic cycle counts and work with the Operations Team to resolve discrepancies. The position will also assist the VP of FP&A and the CFO in forecasting and budgeting processes. Ensure consistent application of cost/inventory accounting principles for all subsidiaries. Work closely with supply chain to determine proper inventory costing, overhead calculations, understand and report production inefficiencies and explain variances. Develop costing methodology and KPI reporting for inventory & management cost reporting. Assist senior management teams with understanding costs, purchase price variances, and other operating measures, including product/SKU level margins through the development of key strategic reports. Manage the process of assessing inventory for excess and obsolescence and ensure proper reserves are recorded. Lead the monthly close process for the cost accounting/inventory team. Review and approve GL journal entries and inventory related monthly balance sheet reconciliations. Analysis and documentation of significant manufacturing variances and provide suggestions on process improvements where needed. Develop strong cross-functional relationships to facilitate and lead a variety of ongoing special projects. Assist with the coordination of deliverables required for annual audits. Prepare ad hoc reporting and analyses. Identify and drive process improvement initiatives. Performs other duties as required. Skills Strong understanding of costing methodologies including standard costing, activity-based costing and variance analysis. Above average skills in Excel, including strong working knowledge of pivot tables, H/VLOOKUP, SUMIFS, etc. Excellent analytical skills with a strong focus on accuracy and attention to detail Excellent communication skills and high confidence in stating professional opinions. Ability to influence and engage business partners, peers, direct/indirect reports; Have ability to effectively interface with senior management. Good team building skills including trust, professionalism, and being able to garner consensus across diverse groups. Initiative-taking and the ability to work independently and collaboratively. Strong organizational skills are essential. Robust internal controls understanding and documentation of all financial processes and transactions. Experience working with NetSuite is a plus. Qualifications Degree in Accounting or Finance; preferably MBA and/or CMA or CPA certification. At least 6+ years of cost accounting experience with working knowledge of inventory valuation, standard costing, bill of materials, work orders, cost rates and factors, variances, and inventory reserves. Experience managing process improvements and implementing process efficiencies as it relates to inventory/cost accounting. Manufacturing background with in-depth knowledge of GAAP, cost accounting, and financial reporting for a manufacturing organization.
