Main Job Tasks and Responsibilities:

The SBA Credit Manager Hire, train and manage credit staff in the SBA Lending Division. Underwrite and approve credit requests for SBA 7(a), and 504. Responsible for updating and implementing policies and procedures and best practices for SBA 7a, 504 and USDA loans. Day to day duties include the review of prequalification submissions from BDO's, credit packages, completion of transaction spreads and financial analysis, preparation of credit presentations, credit modifications, loan commitment letters, and other reports. Presents credit requests as needed to the EB&T credit committee and/or Chief Credit Officer.

Portfolio Risk Management (Credit Approval and Underwriting). Exercises credit approval authority to ensure a granular, diversified and performing portfolio.

  • Supports Bank policy regarding credit concentrations and manages approvals to ensure overall compliance.
  • Supports overall efforts to add new customers to build and diversify the revenue stream.
  • Works with the business line to ensure overall satisfaction and retention through responsive delivery of appropriately structured credit products.
  • Works with the business line to develop proactive strategies to reduce exposure and risk while managing negative market perception.
Through direct management of the Underwriting Group, provides credit underwriting and structural guidance to business line within policy and risk parameters:
  • Develops and monitors workflow priorities for team.
  • Develops policies and procedures to ensure uniform practices across division.
  • Oversees the quality of prescreens and credit presentations so the final product anticipates issues and logically supports the proposed transaction.
  • Provides training and mentoring of Underwriters, developing increased independence in all job aspects, particularly relating to more complex credits.
  • Facilitates periodic credit review of the loan portfolio.
  • Updates Underwriting Group with respect to policy updates regarding SBA loan guidelines and S.O.P.s.

Product Expertise. Serves as the designated credit product expert for Small Business Administration (SBA) Lending:
  • Maintains expert knowledge of relevant regulations (including compliance and related accounting); monitors updates, identifies impacts and recommends changes.
  • Recommends updates to relevant sections of Loan Policy.
  • Establishes related underwriting guidelines and expectations, develops required loan presentation content and standardized approaches, and recommends updates as appropriate.
  • Recommends key loan documentation requirements.
  • Develops related procedures; identifies opportunities for improved efficiency and effectiveness, recommends updates, conducts relevant training.
  • Monitors related exposure concentrations; recommends limits.
  • Serves as product liaison with other departments/business lines.
  • Participates in information sharing meetings with other credit product experts.
  • Works closely with closing and servicing departments to help ensure proper documentation and as an expert reference.
  • Provides advice and expertise on troubled credits as to best course of action.
Personnel Management. Manages overall personnel effectiveness, including recruitment, development, retention and results:
  • Hires and develops highly qualified individuals.
  • Provides a fun, rewarding environment conducive to employee engagement.
  • Ensures clear communication of goals and expectations to ensure achievement of departmental objectives and the Bank's strategic plan through job descriptions, goal setting, performance reviews and actions.

Proactively identifies and deals with underperforming employees and identifies and retains top performing/high potential employees through appropriate incentives and recognition.

Education & Experience:
  • 10+ years' experience in commercial credit underwriting, credit administration and/or credit approval.
  • Minimum 5+ years' experience managing underwriters in an SBA lending environment.
  • Bachelor's degree in related field.
  • Preferred Advanced college degree.
  • Banking/Finance certifications through ABA, Center for Financial Training, Omega Training, Pacific Coast Banking School and/or equivalent a plus.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and professionalism.
  • In-depth knowledge of the banking industry in general, and commercial banking in particular.
