Department Summary

The Center for Human Identification (CHI) is an accredited forensic laboratory on the campus of The University of North Texas Health Science Center at Fort Worth. With funding from the State of Texas and various Federal Government agencies, CHI supports forensic DNA testing, anthropological examinations, local CODIS operations, training, and various research and development initiatives. CHI also manages the Texas Missing Persons DNA Database.

Position Overview

Perform forensic lab duties that include extraction and amplification analysis of data.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, or any discipline related to forensic science; and completed coursework in molecular biology, genetics, biochemistry, and statistics from an accredited university or program approved by the Texas Forensic Science Commission.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.

Job Duties:
  • Complete training and demonstrate competency in technologies and procedures utilized by UNTCHI.
  • Perform casework examination following all quality assurance policies and procedures.
  • Perform evidence examination and documentation.
  • Conduct DNA analysis procedures including DNA extraction, DNA quantification, amplification, sequencing, and capillary electrophoresis.
  • Meet continuing education requirements and review current scientific literature.
  • Perform autosomal STR, YSTR, and mitochondrial DNA analysis on missing persons casework samples.
  • Perform technical review, genetic comparisons including kinship analysis, statistical calculations and report generation.
  • Provide expert witness testimony as required.
  • Maintain proficiency in autosomal STR, YSTR, and mitochondrial DNA analysis procedures and data analysis.
