The City of Sun Prairie is hiring two maintenance positions in the Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department. The Maintenance Technician or Specialist uses their advanced knowledge and work experience to support coworkers in efficiently and safely maintaining the City of Sun Prairie's parks and recreation facilities, open space, and urban forest.

This post is for either a Maintenance Technician or a Maintenance Specialist with requirements for both positions below.

Starting Salary
Maintenance Technician: $25.11 per hour
Maintenance Specialist: $29.48 per hour

This position will be posted until filled with a first review of applications on March 3, 2025.
Essential Job Functions

Maintenance Technician
  • Maintains grounds and turf in city parks and special use areas by mowing, trimming, weeding, and grooming.
  • Assists with diagnoses of turf and plant problems; applies fertilizers and pesticides (WDATCP Pesticide Certification encouraged)
  • Inspects, maintains, and repairs picnic tables, fences, benches, trash cans, and playground equipment, ensuring all equipment is in a safe operating condition.
  • Regularly removes trash and cleans park shelters, facilities, and restrooms.
  • Assists with operations and maintenance of aquatic facilities (city pool and splash pad).
  • Takes initiative to address parks maintenance needs and safety hazards, and notifies appropriate staff when necessary.
  • Responsible for the preparation and flooding of city ice rinks; ensures proper maintenance and snow removal of ice rinks throughout the season.
  • Prepares athletic facilities for department or private use including the lining and grooming of fields and installation of athletic equipment.
  • Assists in preparation for, and clean-up during and after special events.
  • Removes snow or performs de-icing operations.
  • Performs preventative maintenance repairs to parks and recreation facilities and equipment.
  • Operates heavy equipment and dump trucks for moving building materials debris, soils and wood wastes.
  • Regularly utilizes computer hardware and software for inventory and work order procedures.
  • Completes and maintains required paperwork to include reports, logs, inspections, quantity information generated by task activities.
  • Cleans, straightens, and organizes occupied department building and grounds
  • Assist with maintenance of public trees which may include pruning, removing, stump grinding, etc.
  • Utilizes GIS and GPS technology to implement and track work assignments and facility assets.
Maintenance Specialist
  • Perform all activities identified in the Maintenance Technician job description
  • Performs tasks which require advanced competencies in facility management, including plumbing, electrical, welding, fabricating, roofing, construction, or related area.
  • Provide instruction, direction, and vital information to members of department.
  • Work closely with Parks Supervisor in planning and managing work tasks.
  • Record and follow standard operating procedures for various tasks.
  • May develop training programs that are presented to others.
  • Works closely with Parks Supervisor to create self-directed work tasks and responsibilities.
  • Acts as a team leader on the Parks Maintenance Crew, especially for seasonal employees.
  • May draft or revise city policies and procedures.
  • Assist with inventory management and ordering. Proactively identify supply needs in advance of work.
  • Assist with chemical inventory and ensure proper Safety Data Sheets are maintained and reviewed with staff.
  • May be responsible to contact residents, business owners or visitors on behalf of the city to resolve complaints or answer questions. This may include researching the issue, reviewing any applicable city policy or procedure, coordinating a response with other city departments or public agencies, meeting with the complainant to facilitate a professional and respectful conversation, and providing information to educate and proactively avoid future conflict.
  • May participate in and lead work teams in process improvement and standard operating procedure initiatives.
  • Actively develop new skills and attain new knowledge to assist the department with evolving maintenance needs and to improve processes when possible.
Requirements of Work

Maintenance Technician
A High School Diploma or GED equivalent is required. Requires less than one year of knowledge of tools and equipment used in park maintenance, street construction and vehicle repairs; knowledge of materials, methods, techniques and equipment used in landscaping, grounds maintenance; knowledge of operation, safety and efficient use and maintenance of tools, equipment and vehicles. This position requires a 45-minute response time to report to work during emergency call-ins (e.g. snow).

Knowledge of
  • The structure, functions, and operations of municipal government is desirable.
  • Problem solving HVAC systems, plumbing, electrical, and other building maintenance equipment.
  • Repairing and installing equipment in all City facilities.
Ability to
  • Understand and carry out verbal and written instructions usually acquired through a high school diploma or GED.
  • Understand and support organizational policies, procedures, and systems within the organizational structure.
  • Work cooperatively with a diverse group of people.
  • Understand how to safely perform a variety job task and have the ability to teach others in safe work practices.
  • Often uses discretion when making decisions in absence of specific policies and/or guidance from supervisors, but some direct guidance to receive from supervisor.
  • Perform heavy manual labor for extended period in adverse weather conditions.
  • Occasional exposure to construction site conditions including noise levels and other hazards.
  • Wear a respirator when performing certain painting tasks or working with certain chemicals.
  • Make moderate decision making that could result in moderate costs in time, money, and important projects/schedules would likely delay.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Requires a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL - Class A) with air brake certification or ability to obtain within six months of employment.
Maintenance Specialist
In addition to the above requirements of work, a Maintenance Specialist - must have one and three years of knowledge of tools and equipment used in park maintenance, street construction and vehicle repairs; knowledge of materials, methods, techniques and equipment used in landscaping, grounds maintenance; knowledge of operation, safety and efficient use and maintenance of tools, equipment and vehicles and maintain Parks Certifications (must hold one, or have the ability to obtain within 6 months):
  • Certified Arborist - ISA
  • Certified Pool Operator/Aquatic Facility Operator - NRPA
  • Certified Playground Safety Inspector - NRPA
  • Certified Pesticide Applicator - WDATCP
  • Certified Lawn Care Technician - NALP
  • Certified Horticulture Technician - NALP
  • Basic Wildland Firefighter & Prescribed Fire Training - NWCG

INCOME CONTINUATION INS - State Fund This benefit provides up to 75% of your average earnings if you become disabled. The City provides coverage up to $120,000 at the 180-day elimination period. Employees can buy down to a shorter elimination period at their expense. Eligibility begins the 1st of the following month.

VISION INSURANCE

Available for the employee to purchase at their own expense. Coverage begins the 1st of the month following date of hire.

RETIREMENT

Wisconsin Retirement System which requires a matching 6.95% employee contribution.

Deferred Comp, Traditional or Roth IRA The employee can participate in a 457 Deferred Comp Plan, IRA Traditional or Roth IRA, if they choose.

SICK LEAVE

Accumulation of one day per month. At retirement ability to convert sick balance up to 120 days into a Health Reimbursement Account (HRA).

PAID PARENTAL LEAVE

Employees who meet the eligibility criteria and have a qualifying event, shall receive 240 hours of paid parental leave and 80 hours of paid caregiver leave (prorated for part time). Both run concurrent with Family Medical Leave.
