Johnson & Johnson Innovation (JJI) has four Innovation Centers (ICs) in Asia-Pacific, Boston, California, and London. JJDC manages a broad equity investment portfolio, balancing strategic returns with financial risk and return considerations. JJDC’s investment flexibility enables J&J to invest at a variety of stages and structures, including seed investments, equity investments in private companies, structured deals with an equity investment and PIPEs. In 2022, JJDC made over 50 new and follow-on investments and deployed over $375 million in capital.

Key Responsibilities

JJDC is seeking a talented Business Analyst who will support making new equity investments, manage equity portfolio, and provide competitive insights to maintain JJDC’s leadership in corporate venture capital. The successful candidate will work closely with the JJDC investment team and be responsible for sourcing, analyzing, and evaluating investments in target markets and companies, with a principal focus on the medical technology market. Target companies may include new technologies, digital healthcare, product platforms or new businesses for J&J. This person will build and maintain collaborative business relationships within JJDC, J&J Innovation and senior leaders within the J&J operating companies. Additionally, they will engage externally with entrepreneurs, venture capital firms, banks and academic centers.

This person will be an important member of the JJDC investment team and will achieve business objectives through collaboration, coordination, and teamwork. They will demonstrate their leadership skills by participating in and presenting to JJDC’s investment committee and helping to drive the entire investment process on key transactions.

Specific areas in which the successful candidate will lead activities are:

Track emerging growth areas and support identification of new white spaces within the MedTech market. Support market research (primary/secondary) for white space and adjacency areas exploration; Recommend new white space areas based on deep dive analysis of white space areas including competitive landscaping, key market trends etc. (White spaces markets may include but limited to: Interventional oncology, Robotics, Stroke, Structural heart disease, Heart failure, Biomaterials, Urology etc) Evaluate and forecast market size and growth trends in white space areas. Support diligence (clinical, commercial, reimbursement etc) in new pipeline opportunities. Develop preliminary market entry strategy Analyses of healthcare investment trends in venture capital including corporates; Identify appropriate databases etc to ensure access to the trends. Valuation support on new and follow-on investments Maintain resources to manage the portfolio (compensation data, Pitchbook)

Qualifications:

Education

Bachelor's Degree in Scientific field/Engineering required. Advanced Scientific Degree or MBA preferred

Experience

6+ years of healthcare experience including 3+ years R&D/BD/VC, analyst, management or strategic Consulting, Private Equity, Banking.

An advanced degree counts towards 2 years of experience with a total of 6 years Excellent written, analytical, presentation, and interpersonal skills Proficiency in financial modelling, market research, and business model analysis

In addition to the requisite investment domain experience, the candidate must have a history of success throughout his/her life including business, academia and other pursuits. Moreover, it is essential that the candidate has demonstrated the ability to initiate and cultivate meaningful relationships within the investment, academic and entrepreneurial communities. To do so, he/she must bring the requisite credibility, interpersonal and negotiating skills and the commercial strategic insight to formulate and support the highest quality investment recommendations.

More specifically, the ideal candidate will likely possess a track record including many of the following technical competencies and personal characteristics:

Performing deal-side due diligence: conducting market opportunity and competitive analysis, analyzing company performance, gathering diligence inputs from internal and external experts building valuation analysis and models Supporting portfolio companies: developing product, business model and go-to-market strategies, and leveraging JNJ Medtech and industry resources and networks to support portfolio growth. Proven experience with transaction structuring and negotiation including equity and debt financings, merger and acquisition, licensing agreements, joint ventures, etc. Excellent verbal, written communication and presentation skills, coupled with the presence and self-confidence to interface with the key constituents of the firm and J&J internal stakeholders, management teams of portfolio companies, deal sources, service providers and others. Ability to rapidly be conversant with the company’s technology platforms, therapeutic products and markets coupled with the ability to deeply and thoroughly analyze and dissect a business; i.e. understanding the components and drivers of success beyond the financials. The capacity to work individually and as part of a team effort. Additionally, he/she will be able to work with flexibility, efficiency, enthusiasm and diplomacy and have demonstrated the ability to develop less senior investment team members, lead by example and influence to encourage collaboration across functions, levels, and groups to achieve shared objectives. A strong business orientation combined with unquestionable integrity, dependability, ethics and financial skills. This person must have a penchant for delivering the highest quality output with a strong sense of urgency to a variety of stakeholders.
