II. Job Summary

CAPI's mission is to guide refugees and immigrants in their journey toward self-determination. Today, we are an inclusive, multilingual, and immigrant-led nonprofit serving over 7,000 new refugees and immigrants from all over the world, including Minnesota's Asian, East, and West African, Latinx, and underserved US-born communities, annually across three core service areas: Basic Needs, Economic Empowerment, and Civic Engagement.

This position provides direct financial services and coordinates agency partnerships that further enhance CAPI's continuum of financial services. The Financial Coach reports to CAPI's Economic Empowerment Director and works with all CAPI staff to promote engagement with the agency's financial services. In fulfilling direct service and partnership coordination functions, this position participates in the ongoing development, implementation, and evaluation of financial services programming and data tracking and reporting.

The physical duties of this position are consistent with work performed in an office setting. This job description serves only as a general description of the anticipated day-to-day responsibilities of the position. The Economic Empowerment Director retains the discretion to add or change this position's duties at any time.

To perform this job successfully, you must be able to carry out each essential job function satisfactorily.

III. Essential Job Functions

  1. Provides direct financial services*50%
  • Provides one-on-one financial/homeownership coaching services to participants that include family budgeting, balance sheet development and tracking, credit and credit score building, and access assistance to other financial services and financial institutions
  • Develop action plans that will help participants achieve their financial goals
  • Provides group financial education workshops and training (i.e., monthly training/workshops)
  • Facilitate ongoing 8-hour Homestretch Homebuyer workshops regularly
  • Provides technical assistance to employment counselors who facilitate family budgeting sessions
  • with their participants
  • Must obtain certification as a HUD-Certified Housing Counselor, Financial Capabilities, and other topic areas

  1. Increase community engagement with financial services as a vehicle to build wealth* 30%
  • Work with CAPI staff to promote client access and engagement with CAPI's financial services offerings
  • Promote and engage participants in CAPI's Financial Opportunity Center (FOC) activities, which may include one-on-one financial coaching, employment services, and benefit screening/enrollment
  • Market financial services to CAPI participants and the communities targeted by the agency's two multi-service centers


  1. Partnership development and coordination* 15%
  • Identify and refer participants to other resources and services needed to achieve their financial goals
  • Cultivate, identify, and maintain relationships with key community partners
  • With the Economic Empowerment Director serves as the central point of contact and coordinator with other partnerships to make financial services increasingly accessible at CAPI's two multi-service centers

  1. Service evaluation, reporting, and strong team player* 20%
  • Collects participant output and outcome data. Data is entered into the agency's Salesforce data management system and other possible systems such as Homekeeper, MFHA DCS, and LISC Salesforce. Reviews and evaluates data on an ongoing basis.
  • Submits narrative and numerical grant reports on an ongoing basis.
  • Builds person-centered, asset-based relationships and promotes integrated service delivery.
  • Attends and consistently contributes to unit meetings, all staff meetings, and agency-sponsored events.
  • Represents and promotes the agency's mission and programs in various public settings.

  1. Civic Engagement/Public Policy* 5%
  • Supports CAPI's agency-wide Civic Engagement/Public Policy values and initiatives and incorporates civic engagement into ongoing work
  • Participates in voter registration and pledge drives, educational/outreach initiatives, GOTV activities, and Public Policy work.


IV. Position Requirements:

  1. Education and Experience
  • 2-year degree plus 2 years of related experience or 4+ years of related experience may be considered

Previous experience in financial & homeownership funding, integrated programming, and work with diverse communities is strongly preferred.

  1. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • You are bilingual in the English and Spanish languages (required).
  • Knowledge of various financial & homeownership programs, local provider organizations, and funders.
  • Knowledge of financial & homeownership best practices associated with individual budgeting sessions, credit building, financial action goal plans, case management methods, etc.
  • Ability to interpret, develop, and stay within a budget.
  • Ability to work both as a team member and independently with minimum supervision.
  • Knowledge and experience in project design, development, implementation and evaluation.
  • Ability to interpret legislation and regulations and effectively integrate and communicate these rules and regulations with programs and staff.
  • Effective communication skills - both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to manage time effectively, prioritize, and meet deadlines, managing and tracking multiple programs simultaneously.
  • Skilled in group processes and facilitation of effective meetings.
  • Ability to work effectively and respectfully with people of many cultures, nationalities, and groups.
  • Ability to use MS Office products, internet & program databases
  • Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends as needed.
  1. Licenses and/or Certifications
  • Valid MN Drivers' License, access to reliable transportation, and the ability to meet CAPI's driving record requirements.
  • HUD Test approved or committed to take the test within the first 6 months of employment.
  • Financial Counseling Certification, Housing Counseling Certification, Homebuying Education Certification, Credit Counseling Certification or committed to take the test within the first 12 months of employment.


V. Working Conditions and Environment

This position is located in an office building. It is accessible and smoke-free. It works during normal business hours and may include evening and/or weekend hours.
