Akebia Therapeutics, Inc., is looking for an experienced hands-on Accounting & Finance Associate Director who is an enthusiastic team member with a solid technical accounting background in the functional area of Cost Accounting and Inventory. This role will report to the Controller and will play a critical role in driving the inventory monthly/quarterly close processes to ensure a high quality, accurate and efficient close, enabling the Company to meet both its internal timelines and external SEC reporting/filing timelines, while ensuring the Company's SOX internal controls are operating effectively. A key goal for the Associate Director, Cost Accounting will be to drive continuous improvement and optimization of our business processes specific to financial management and scalability of inventory and manufacturing activities across the Company, in preparation for the launch of additional commercial product(s). This role is responsible for adherence to and identification of internal controls over inventory and cost of goods sold and related activities.

The Associate Director Cost Accounting will:

  • Manage the inventory accounting function consisting of the monthly/quarterly closing process including preparation of all journal entries, and monthly/quarterly balance sheet reconciliations.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks & prioritize workload within tight deadlines under minimal supervision.
  • Recommend changes necessary to improve the close process.
  • Responsible for accurate and timely completion of monthly/quarterly cost accounting tasks including:
    • Inventory costing, reserve analysis, cost of goods sold, overhead calculation, cost adjustments.
    • Capitalization rules surrounding inventory accounting.
    • Preparation of all inventory-related journal entries at month-end.
  • Collaborate with Operations Team on timely & accurate reconciliation of external inventory against internally tracked perpetual balances.
  • Assist with the planning and execution of the annual physical inventory counts including analysis and reporting of results. Travel to international and domestic locations for physical inventories is required.
  • Maintain and ensure ongoing compliance with accounting policies, procedures & SOX Controls.
  • Provide support for independent auditors in their quarterly reviews and annual audits, including preparation of support for audit requests.
  • Responsible for SOX 404 inventory compliance including:
    • Internal control design and documentation
    • Walkthroughs and testing of controls by both external auditors and our internal audit firm, including preparation of support for all requests.
  • Respond to inquiries from the Controller and other finance and companywide managers regarding financial results, special reporting request and the like.

Basic Qualifications

  • BA/BS in Accounting or Finance
  • 6+ years of relevant experience, including 4+ years of industry experience specifically in the areas of Pharmaceutical Manufacturing, Supply and Quality Operations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with NetSuite a plus
  • CPA, CMA or MBA preferred
  • Experience in Pharmaceuticals/Biotech industry
  • Knowledge of Supply Chain Operations
  • Experience leading and driving process improvements
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office along with significant experience using Excel
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of inventory related functions and US GAAP, including cutoff and accruals with the ability to work closely with other departments to ensure completeness and accuracy of all accrued expenses related to manufacturing
  • Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines and work collaboratively with both internal and external stakeholders
  • Excellent organization skills and attention to detail
  • Excellent analytical, communication and interpersonal skills
