Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization that supports the independently incorporated Planned Parenthood affiliates operating health centers across the U.S. Planned Parenthood Action Fund is an independent, nonpartisan, not-for-profit membership organization formed as the advocacy and political arm of Planned Parenthood Federation of America. The Action Fund engages in educational, advocacy, and electoral activity, including grassroots organizing, legislative advocacy, and voter education. PPFA and PPAFseek an experienced and engaging Associate Director, Culture & Equity to join the People, Culture, & Equity division (PCE). Reporting to the Senior Director, PCE, this role will support progress towards our strategic goal of becoming a Great Place to Work for All and further embedding equity within the DNA of our culture.
This role operates on a hybrid schedule, requiring at least 2 days per week in-office (NYC or DC).
Purpose:
The Associate Director, Culture & Equity will execute and maintain PPFAs culture and equity strategy and framework, delivering innovative and sustainable approaches to fostering an inclusive workplace where all employees feel valued, seen and heard. This role, under the leadership of the Senior Director, PCE, will develop the capacity across the organization to incorporate a race equity framework to eliminate inequities in policies, systems, and practices.
The Associate Director, Culture & Equity also holds responsibility for experience measurement at each phase of the employee life-cycle, experience data analysis, data reporting, and improvement strategies (action planning).
This leader is uniquely qualified to lead this work based on expertise in Workplace Culture, Employee Experience, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, Trauma Informed Practices, Leadership Coaching, and Experience Measurement and Data Analysis.
Delivery:
• Support Senior Director, PCE with assessing federation-wide culture and employee engagements needs, via in-depth needs/strengths/capacity assessments, employee engagement surveys, pulse surveys, other federation surveys, anecdotal feedback, and anecdotal data collected as required
• Hold responsibility for implementation of Race Equity Culture framework, including but not limited to DEI content and learning, policy review, Bias Incident Reporting, and other programming as assigned
• Partner with the learning and leadership development team to ensure DEI principles are embedded throughout all of PPFAs learning and leadership development framework
• Consult with various leaders across the PCE division and the organization to ensure integration of In This Together into the Employee Life Cycle at the National Office by providing learning, sustainability tools and additional material when needed (i.e. job postings, job descriptions, interview guides, performance conversations, meeting agendas, retreats, etc.)
• Provide accreditation support alongside the Senior Director, PCE and bring a high level of DEI expertise to the affiliate accreditation process (certification to be a PP affiliate) review, working with leaders under the Federation Engagement and Impact (FEI) division and affiliate leaders, as needed
• Ensure successful administration of the Great Places to Work (GPTW) survey (annually and pulse surveys as needed)
• Spearheads cross-departmental GPTW work-stream, and assume responsibility for annual survey administration, pulse survey administration, data analysis, data reporting and leadership coaching during action planning
• Partner with the Learning & Leadership Development team on the design, development and facilitation of trainings and sessions designed to enhance culture and further embed equity
• Collaborate and manage certain projects assigned to Senior Director, PCE
• Demonstrate commitment to and embodiment of gender, racial and reproductive justice values and demonstrated ability to apply those values to the employee experience and learning solutions
• Build and maintain relationships with stakeholders at various organizational levels to increase engagement center equity
• Source and manage PPFAs relationships with external consulting partners to achieve division goals to improve psychological safety, team and individual development
• Provide guidance and consultation to people leaders in matters of team and individual engagement and effectiveness
• Regularly facilitate or co-facilitate any programing or synchronous learning as a part of the Race Equity Culture framework implementation at the national office
• Inform PPFAs annual Solidarity Conference planning and execution alongside primary co-leads (Manager, Culture & Equity and Learning & Leadership Development Manager).
Engagement:
• Serve as key partner to Senior Director, PCE
• Work across the entire federation, primarily providing support to affiliates around DEI programs and ITT org-culture programs and services while also supporting national office initiatives
• Build trusting, strong and collaborative relationships with PCE Business Partners, broader PCE team, leaders and staff at all levels across the organization to advance the critical priorities for the organization
• Serve as a DEI partner and SME on various work-streams, committees, advisory boards, etc. to ensure equitable strategies and procedures within work
• Demonstrate a commitment to race equity and maintain current knowledge of PPFAs work toward enhanced race equity standards, holding themselves and their team members accountable
• Manage and mentor a culturally diverse internal team, creating and sustaining a team culture that fosters inclusiveness and equity
• Lead team members using a performance support process that includes goal setting, routine feedback, and ongoing development
• Empower staff to deliver assigned responsibilities and manage their functions
• Continuously maintain professional growth and learning by attending and engaging in internal and external conferences, seminars, etc.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs):
• At least 2+ years of people management experience is required.
• 5 years of related work experience working in any combination of org development, employee experience, human resources, and/or DEIB is required, preferably within a large and/or federated not-for-profit organization.
• Planned Parenthood affiliate experience is preferred.
• Strong experience with organizational cultural frameworks that include company values, service standards, etc.
• Experience and fluency implementing training curricula & education related to diversity, equity and inclusion for adult learners (experience with training trainers in the art of facilitating conversations rooted in identity is useful)
• Base knowledge of core diversity concepts including power and privilege, systems of oppression, emotional intelligence, implicit bias, etc.
• Experienced facilitator (i.e., understands the difference between presentation and facilitation)
• Knowledge of global trends in DEI, Employee Engagement, and Workplace Culture and can apply to learning solutions and other org-wide interventions
• Strong customer service orientation
• Ability to proactively develop solutions to problems and challenges in project management and knowledge of when to ask for help and support
• Strong oral and written communicator with excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to build strong, effective partnerships with both internal and external stakeholders to work effectively across difference, soliciting feedback and input from significant stakeholder groups
• High proficiency in Google products
• Flexibility and ability to adapt to quickly changing priorities and ambiguous situations
• Commitment to PPFAs mission and DEI, particularly surrounding race equity
• Ability to execute strong visual design and comfort with various presentation tools (i.e., Powerpoint, Canva, Excel)
• Experience with applying Trauma-Informed Practices (has completed training or certification in this area, worked with a mentor, etc.) and familiarity with employee wellbeing concepts: burnout, decompression, and whole-person approach at work
Travel: 0-20%, domestically
