Position SummaryThis position is responsible for the research functions for the Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences across multiple sites: Lions Institute of Eye Research, College of Medicine Research Building, Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary as well as the Specialty Care Building. The Manager of Research Operations is responsible for grant writing assistance and submission, and training/compliance functions relating to grant & clinical trials administration. In addition, the Manager of Research Operation will be responsible for overseeing and facilitating an interdisciplinary research program aligned to the larger strategic aspiration and goals for the UIC Campus.
The Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences within the UIC College of Medicine is ranked #13 nationwide in NIH funding by the Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research. The Manager of Research Operations will coordinate, oversee and grow the current research portfolio.
Duties & Responsibilities
Research

Provide writingassistance that can range from critiquing, editing, and rewriting drafts towriting an entire proposal.
Research and reviewsponsor requirements at the proposal stage and ensure compliance prior toapplication submission. Prepareprotocol timeline.
Prepare proposaldocumentation, including Proposal Approval Form (PAF), budgets, institutionalinformation, budget justifications, sponsor compliance and regulatoryinformation for routing to the Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP).
Organize departmentalresearch meetings to discuss research issues and foster intradepartmentalcollaborations.
Prepare progressreports for all departmental grants and awarded programmatic grants such asP30, K12 and RPB.
Work with theDepartment Head and/or the Associate Head for Research on new initiatives toimprove research funding and visibility.
Interdisciplinary Research

Manage an interdisciplinary research program involvingmultiple stakeholders across the UIC Campus.
Collaborate closely with multiple faculty, seniorexecutives, and Campus stakeholders across UIC College of Dentistry, Collegeof Engineering, College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, College of Medicine,College of Pharmacy and the Office of Research Development for operationalneeds.
Collaborate with the delivery team to ensure keyprojects are resourced and run successfully.
Collaborate with senior executive leadership to define,structure launch, and drive strategic and operational initiatives.
Lead multiple cross-functional teams charged withimplementing project objectives in addition to meeting project deadlines.

Regulatory Compliance

Provides support and serve as a resource forPIs to help facilitate the preparation and progress of institutionally requiredresearch protocols (e.g., IBC, ACC, IRB).
Ensure that Good Clinical Research Practice(GCPs) and SOPs are met throughout the clinical trials/programs overseen byOCTTC.
Participate in the preparation of new studybudgets; negotiation of contracts with accounting department; supports invoicereview through payment to patients.
Plan, develop and interpret policies andprocedures to ensure efficiency, accuracy and proper oversight of thedepartments research enterprise.
Maintain accurate, complete and currentinformation in appropriate format and databases to track clinical researchcompliance with FDA, NIH, UIC and sponsored guidelines, i.e. complete andprocess appropriate documentation as outlined by FDA, NIH, study sponsors andthe university.
Collaborates with the Office of ViceChancellor for Research for proposal and compliance for human subjectsresearch.
Training

Develop and lead training for project team includingcommunity partners regarding project terms, requirements, reporting,compliance, etc.
Plan, develop and interpret policies and procedures toensure efficiency, accuracy and proper oversight of the departments researchenterprise.
Develop and update training materials as needed about changesin sponsors (federal or non-federal) policies affecting research operations.
Reporting

Lead the creation of reports for the principalinvestigator and project team detailing expenditures, balances, sub awards,metrics, milestones etc.
Prepare ad hoc reports for the Department Head, Directorof Administrative Operations and Principal Investigators as requested.
Research Seminar Series

Organize, manage & lead the monthly Research SeminarSeries and intradepartmental workshops/seminars to share research findings,cultivate collaborative interactions and facilitate ophthalmology & visonresearch. S/he will be responsible forinviting faculty members, clinical trainees and students, as well asprominent researchers from UIC and other reputable institutes.
Performs other duties &special projects as assigned.
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications

Bachelors degree in social or basic sciences, humanities, business, or public health is required.
Minimum of three years experience in a research management setting with at least two years of research administration required; Knowledge of principles and processes involved in contractual and grant monitoring procedures required.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to work effectively under pressure.
Ability to implement systems and follow-up processes.
Proficiency in research, interpreting, and analyzing diverse data.
Demonstrated leadership skills and ability to work collaboratively in a team-based environment.
Demonstrated experience with a proven track record of securing new funding opportunities; comprehensive knowledge of research, and the ability to distinguish and identify opportunities for UIC academic and technical programs.
