Position Purpose
Under general supervision, the Dental Hygienist works under the direction of the Director of Dentistry and Director of Outreach and Mobile health providing oral health services to American Indian/Alaska native (AI/AN) children, youth, and families that are eligible to receive services through Denver Indian Health and Family Services, Inc. (DIHFS). This position's focus is on the clinic and mobile health unit.
Essential Duties
The Dental Hygienist is responsible for evaluating, assessing, and diagnosing clients by conducting initial patient screenings, cleaning teeth (e.g., removing plaque), and advising patients on oral health and preventative care.
Other Duties: As Assigned
Job Qualifications
Collect medical and dental histories from patients.
Chart dental conditions based on dentist's observations and evaluations.
Create molds of patient's teeth in preparation for dentures, bridges, and other prostheses.
Sterilize dental instruments and tools.
Instruct patients of all ages on proper dental hygiene care.
Take x-rays of patients' teeth and develop them for dentist's use.
Provide chair-side assistance during dental procedures.
SKILLS and ABILITIES
Compassion : Those who work in this occupation, as well as others in the healthcare field, need a desire to help a diverse set of people.
Manual Dexterity : Excellent fine motor skills are needed to grasp instruments and work inside patients' mouths.
Interpersonal Skills : When dealing with patients, you must be able to relate to them, recognize when they are uncomfortable or anxious, and reassure them.
Attention to Detail : Without the ability to pay attention to detail, it will be impossible to perform several aspects of your job including noticing stains and other treatable issues during cleanings and, while examining patients' teeth, detecting potential health problems requiring the dentist's attention.
Physical Stamina : Excellent stamina is essential since dental hygienists spend a lot of time on their feet.
Special Conditions: Must be willing to travel with the mobile health unit throughout Colorado.
