Spread the Word Nevada (STWN) was formed in February 2001 by Co-Founders Laurie Hartig and Lisa Habighorst.

STWN has various programs that support, coordinate, and facilitate the mission to advance childhood literacy. Programs include the Kids-to-Kids program, the Breakfast/Snack Time with Books program, the Books & Buddies program, and the Readers in Training. Currently, the Organization's programs are being implemented, supported, and utilized throughout a continuously growing number of elementary schools throughout the Greater Las Vegas Valley, Washoe County, and Elko County, Nevada.

Position Overview:

STWN is looking to hire a highly motivated individual proficient in the best practices of nonprofit financial management and internal controls. The staff accountant will support the Director of Finance and Administration (DFA) in the daily accounting functions to maintain accurate financial records and transactions. The Staff Accountant will reconcile the general ledger and compile data for statements of financial position, financial activity, and other related financial reports. Staff Accountant will prepare all monthly and annual reports and reconciliations for grant programs and ensure timely submission and tracking of grant budget(s). Familiar with and understanding compliance with policies and procedures, including 2 CFR 200 for federal awards. Accurately analyze grant data and implement checks and balances to prevent errors and fraud.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities
  • Enter accounts payable, manage vendor payments, prepare check payments, prepare electronic payments, maintain vendor records
  • Perform daily banking procedures.
  • Health & Ancillary: Monthly downloading Invoice and Coding
  • Enter accounts receivable, post payments, manage collections, follow up on customer and vendor requests
  • Monitor finance@ Email (incl. forwarding emails directing them to relevant staff/departments/Managers)
  • Process, input, and run reports for In-Kind Gifts/Donations.
  • Assist with payroll entry, time sheet maintenance, insurance allocations/updates, and expense reimbursements
  • Perform month-end closing procedures in accordance with the closing schedule, including bank reconciliations and journal entries.
  • Assist in the preparation of internal financial statements by reconciling and analyzing information from the general ledger system
  • Answer accounting and financial questions by researching and interpreting data.
  • Assist management with ad hoc research, projects, and reports
  • Prepare all monthly invoices, project milestones, and annual reports that include reconciliations for grant funding and ensure timely submission and tracking of grant budget(s).
  • Familiar with and understand compliance with policies and procedures, including 2 CFR 200 for federal awards.
  • Accurately analyze grant data and implement checks and balances to prevent errors and fraud.
Other duties related to the fundamental aspects of the Staff Accountant or related positions may be assigned at the discretion of the DFA and CEO.

Education or Experience Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or general business is desired, but an associate's degree in finance or business administration with additional experience will be considered
  • Proven work experience in nonprofit fund accounting or a relevant field is required
  • Thorough knowledge of nonprofit accounting and corporate finance principles and procedures
  • Experience with QuickBooks is required
Requirements/Qualifications
  • Familiarity with an office environment and how the organization operates.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Must possess the proficient ability to communicate in English in oral and written format.
  • Excellent time management skills and ability to multi-task and prioritize work.

Physical & Mental Demands and Working Conditions: Requirements

Work Environment: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to excessive heat and wet and/or humid outside conditions. Due to working in the office, warehouse, and/or school setting, the noise level in the environment is moderate to high.

Hours: Monday to Friday, 8:00 am to 4:00 pm

Reports to: Director of Finance and Administration

Employment Status: Full-Time

FLSA Status: Exempt

Salary: $50,000 to $52,500 depending on experience
