Security Officer

The Historic New Orleans Collection (HNOC) is a museum, research center, and publisher dedicated to the study and preservation of the history and culture of New Orleans and the Gulf South region. The Collection is currently accepting resumes for the position of Security Officer.

Under the direction of the Security Manager, the Security Officer helps safeguard staff, visitors, properties, and collections for The Historic New Orleans Collection by patrolling the properties and responding to calls for service.

The ideal candidate must have a minimum of one year of experience of related experience.

This is a full-time position working Tuesday through Saturday. The Collection offers a competitive salary and a dynamic, educational culture.

Under the direction of the Security Manager, the Security Officer helps safeguard staff, visitors, properties, and collections for The Historic New Orleans Collection by patrolling the properties and responding to calls for service.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The below duties and responsibilities are essential core functions of this position. Other duties may be assigned as needed.
  • Performs regular and routine security patrols to enforce THNOC's security protocol and best practices and to protect the safety of property and persons.
  • Conducts thorough and extensive pre-opening and post-closing inspections of the properties.
  • Monitors unusual or suspicious occurrences, including safety hazards and visitors' issues, and responds accordingly. Reports problems to the proper personnel.
  • Provides assistance/aid to visitors. Assists in de-escalating and resolving visitor issues.
  • Provides security and crowd control during public events such as symposiums, concerts, receptions, etc.
  • Carries out security investigations as directed.
  • Accurately completes paperwork and documentation as needed. Provides information to pertinent parties as needed.
  • Provides backup to other security personnel as needed.
  • Keeps abreast of industry standards and best practices.
Job Qualifications:

Below are the minimum requirements necessary for this position.

Experience:
  • Minimum of one year of related experience.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
  • Ability to determine the root cause of incidents and respond accordingly.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents, rules, manuals, etc.
  • Ability to effectively use conflict resolution skills and work with the public.
  • Ability to clearly and concisely communicate verbally and in writing.
  • Knowledge of and ability to operate surveillance equipment.
  • Knowledge of and ability to use Microsoft Office and related software.
  • Ability to effectively alert appropriate personnel or agencies of incidents.
  • Ability to work as part of a team and collaborate with others as well as demonstrated ability to work independently and exercise judgment.
  • Ability to be flexible and responsive to an evolving work environment. Ability to work nights and weekends as needed.
  • Exceptional skill in remaining alert and focused on details throughout the shift.
  • Exceptional customer service skills.
  • Ability to acquire and maintain any specialized certifications such as first responder, CPR, etc.
  • Good physical condition with ability to lift up to 50 pounds
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and/or local regulations.

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to remain in a stationary position, move throughout the properties and in other settings, operate a computer and other office machinery, ascend/descend and traverse heights and low levels, position self to work at work station and in small areas and monitor the movement of or personally move objects to low, medium and/or high levels. This position may also require climbing, standing, bending, stooping, typing, or regularly move objects of up to 25 pounds and occasionally up to 50 pounds. This position consistently communicates with co-workers and others and observes, inspects, detects, and assesses equipment, buildings, surroundings and structures. This position must complete and use applicable training. Occasional exposure to outside elements and mold, mildew, or other similar contaminants/residues.
