The role of the National Electronic Disease Surveillance SystemDirector is to direct the NBS/Surveillance program within the Infectious Disease Epidemiology & Prevention division and provide expert surveillance and technical leadership to a diverse team of epidemiologists, data analysts, and other staff. This includes overseeing maintenance and support of the national electronic disease surveillance system, overseeing improvements to electronic lab and case reporting, supporting infectious disease surveillance with technical improvements, and overseeing annual updates to communicable disease reporting rules and data submission. The salary for this position traditionally starts at$85,020.00but may be commensurate with education or work experience. A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows: Provide scientific, administrative, and program direction and leadership for assigned program area. Through program area epidemiologists and staff, plans, assigns, schedules, prioritizes, directs and coordinates the work of assigned epidemiologists and senior epidemiologists, and other staff. Conduct performance reviews of epidemiologists and other staff with assigned program area, ensuring accuracy and quality of work and overall work performance. Give advice and counsel to employees and instructs them on both work and administrative matters. Responsible for budget planning and tracking and making decisions about budgetary issues. Plan, direct, oversee, and manage epidemiologic studies and urgent outbreak investigations. Lead the development and conduct of epidemiologic studies for program planning. Oversee the design of instruments for the collection of surveillance information and data. Conduct and develop methods for advanced descriptive and comprehensive analyses of surveillance data for multiple purposes. Develop and provide recommendations to high-ranking officials about the control of disease and public health topics based on the results of surveillance, field investigations, and laboratory tests and on available and acceptable methods of control. Make oral presentations on results of data analyses and other information to diverse audiences. Participate in writing grants and other funding proposals with respect to surveillance, epidemiology, and program evaluation. Develops requests for proposals and contracts. Develop and evaluate methods of training for health care providers and local staff about appropriate methods of controlling diseases and public health topics. Coordinate disease information and data with other divisions and other state and federal agencies. Assist with development, preparation, review and distribution of procedures and protocols for various disease investigations and public health topics. Coordinate department staff in responding to public health concerns during public health emergencies. Prepare reports and other documents as required. Facilitate dissemination of epidemiologic information to media representatives, other health professionals, lay organizations, and private individuals. Interpret data gathered by other divisions and agencies to identify increased disease rates. Serve as a subject matter expert on various public health issues, for internal and external workgroups, task forces, and the media. Maintain continuity of operations for the assigned division in the absence of other epidemiology program directors and/or division director. Serve as a backup to other staff, as needed. If applicable for program area, serve as the IDOH epidemiologist on call after business hours for approximately two to three weeks per year. Recruit, select, onboard, and train employees to ensure role responsibilities and expectations are clearly understood while providing opportunities to continue professional development. You must meet the following requirement to be considered for employment: A master’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., public health, biological sciences, or social sciences) and ≥ 5 years’ relevant public health experience OR A master’s degree or higher in a non-relevant field and ≥ 6 years’ relevant public health experience OR A doctoral-level degree in epidemiology or other relevant field, and ≥ 3 years’ relevant public health experience OR A graduate or professional degree in a health-related field (e.g., RN, MD/DO, DDS/DMD, DVM, PhD, RS) with specific epidemiology training (e.g., MPH degree, CDC Epidemic Intelligence Service, or CSTE Applied Epidemiology Fellowship), and ≥ 3 years’ relevant public health experience OR A bachelor’s degree in a relevant field and ≥ 8 years’ relevant public health experience OR A bachelor’s degree in a non-relevant field and ≥ 10 years’ relevant public health experience. Current employee promotion requirement: Internal candidate should be a high-performing Epidemiologist E6 or other internal role based on demonstrated ability, competency attainment, and/or performance feedback. Supervisory experience strongly preferred. Ability to communicate with health care professionals, state and local officials, public health officials, the media, and lay individuals verbally and in writing in individual or group settings. Extensive ability to lead epidemiologic assessment and analysis; identification of public health problems, oversee surveillance, ensure investigations are conducted, ensure study design and data collection, dissemination, and use of ethical/legal principles, ensure management and analysis of data, evaluate investigation conclusions and interpretations, determine evidence-based interventions and control measures, ensure program evaluations are conducted.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:
