Job Title: Environmental Health Scientist II Job Description: This is a working-level job that may be under-filled as an Environmental Health Scientist II or I. An Environmental Health Scientist II covers one or more areas of specialty in food, meat, produce, or dairy compliance; and assists in planning, coordination, and implementation of food and dairy compliance programs. Reviews state and federally-regulated food and dairy industry facilities and advises others on the interpretation and enforcement of laws. Under general supervision, performs inspections and investigations involving a high degree of independent judgment. Assures the reconditioning, removal, or destruction of condemned products, and prepares cases and court actions. These activities include essential food safety and public health protection responsibilities. Maintains liaison with federal and local agencies and gives talks and lectures to interested parties. Principal Duties: Inspects facilities, machinery, equipment, systems, etc., to verify safety, maintenance, conditions, functions, and quality. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and/or state laws, regulations, and/or agency rules, standards and guidelines, etc. Gathers, identifies, and/or stores samples of materials to be tested on-site or forwarded to a laboratory for testing. Condemns, detains, embargoes, or stops the sale of unfit equipment, machinery, structures, or agricultural and food products. Maintains detailed inspection or investigation records, prepares reports, and attends to other related administrative requirements. Evaluate cases and determine the need for ongoing agency involvement. Issues or recommends issuance of orders, citations, sanctions, and/or warnings for infractions involving violations of federal and/or state laws, rules, and regulations. Coordinates and/or acts as a liaison between other agencies, work units, organizations, and suppliers. Receives, researches, and responds to incoming questions or complaints; provides information, explains policy and procedures, and/or facilitates a resolution. Develops educational materials and speaks to state or community groups. Writes or drafts correspondence, reports, documents, and/or other written materials. Ideal Candidate: Read, interpret, and apply laws, rules, regulations, policies, and/or procedures. Delivers presentations or training using acceptable methods and techniques. Be aware of principles, theories, and practices of production, processing, storage, and distribution of agricultural goods. Be able to learn principles, theories, and practices of agricultural science, food safety and public health protection. Be able to compose and produce reports, documents and related material. Be able to enter, transcribe, record, store, or maintain information in either written or electronic form. Speak clearly, concisely, and effectively; listen to, and understand, information and ideas as presented verbally. Communicate fluently in English. Communicate ideas clearly, and concisely, in writing; read and understand information presented in writing. Be able to evaluate information against a set of standards. Be able to deal with people in a manner which shows sensitivity, tact, and professionalism.
