The Air Force Research Laboratory Information Directorate (AFRL/RI), Integration and Operations division (RIO), seeks to hire a Supervisory Recreation Specialist, DO-0188-01. The primary purpose of this position is to plan, manage and administer a comprehensive year-round Rome Research Site wellness, fitness, and sports program.

Roles and responsibilities of this position include:
  • Supervise a staff of 4 employees; assign and review work assignments and plan work schedules, approve or disapprove leave, determine performance objectives, and rate performance.
  • Plan, develop, organize, and manages diverse and comprehensive wellness, physical fitness and sport programs which Include group exercise classes, self-directed fitness and sports programs, incentive programs, special events, intramural, extramural, varsity sports, and instructional programs.
  • Determine adequacy of facilities and equipment, identify additional needs and recommend facility construction, alterations, and renovation projects. Monitor operation, repair, and maintenance of existing facilities, contractors, and equipment. Ensure regular inspections are conducted on fitness and sports equipment, fields, and facilities. Documents discrepancies and alert the appropriate office with concerns.
  • Develop and implement programs to accommodate the wide range of interests for both fitness and sports activities.
  • Develop, implement, monitor and document a comprehensive training program to ensure all customers possess the necessary skills and knowledge for their activities.
  • Implement higher headquarters wellness program objectives and goals at the installation level.

Required Qualifications
  • United States Citizenship.
  • The ability to obtain and maintain appropriate security clearance.
  • Successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
  • Males must be registered for Selective Service, see www.sss.gov.
Education, Undergraduate and Graduate Education: Major study general recreation, or one of the appropriate fields of recreation, such as outdoor recreation; recreation and parks leadership; wild land recreation management; natural resources recreation; youth recreation; public, urban, or community recreation; special population recreation (e.g., senior citizens, institutional, etc.); or physical education.

OR

One year of Specialized Experience at the next lower grade. Specialized experienceis experience that demonstrates the ability to apply the principles of one or more specialty areas of recreation. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include:
  • Planning, organizing, coordinating, supervising, or evaluating community, industrial, outdoor, institutional, or other recreational programs.
  • Planning, establishing, or evaluating a recreational curriculum for junior college or higher academic levels.
  • Instructing in the principles and techniques of recreational program planning and management.
  • Serving in a leadership role in the programs and activities of local, regional, and/or national recreational organizations.
