Title:  Project Engineer

Location: Charlotte, North Carolina

ZAPATA is a full-service architecture and engineering company with operations throughout the Continental United States in support of Department of Defense, federal government, and private sector clients.  The company is seeking a Project Engineer to work in the Charlotte, NC office.

Position Summary:

Position includes responsibility for project schedules, budgets and design requirements; project specifications and cost estimates; and close interaction with a multidisciplinary staff of engineers. Position is responsible for technical engineering work performing a variety of engineering tasks for assigned projects. Will plan, schedule, and manage all technical tasks to assure proper resources are assigned, and a quality product is delivered. Position may supervise small teams of multiple engineers of various technical disciplines for specific project actions.

Responsibilities/Duties:

  • Reviews client source control drawings, specification control drawings and other applicable specifications to determine requirements and/or feasibility of the component.
  • Prepares preliminary design proposal(s).
  • Interacts with production personnel to define and solve design issues and implement cost reduction ideas with regard to our products.
  • Performs liaison function between Engineering and other operations for any related issues, problems, or improvements.
  • Works with Project Managers to define problem areas and implement product improvements based on client concerns.
  • Negotiates with subcontractors for services related to projects
  • Maintains the project file
  • Participates in engineering and general design review
  • Prepares technical data such as qualification test procedures, acceptance test procedures, reports, component maintenance manuals, etc.
  • Interacts with clients on engineering design.
  • Keeps Division Manager advised of work status, workload, problems, and progress as related to work assignments.
  • Prepares internal project budgets and schedules
  • Responsible for meeting project schedules and budget targets
  • Oversees manpower allocations and supervision 
  • Reviews scope of technical issues and outline technical approach to solutions
  • Prepares cost estimates for new projects
  • Reviews analysis of project’s budget, schedule, and technical performance at project closure to identify lessons learned and develop any corrective actions required
  • Prepares specifications or construction cost estimates
  • Conducts site visits to document conditions
  • Prepares written reports
  • Evaluates, selects and applies standard engineering techniques, procedures and criteria, using judgment in making some substantial engineering adaptations and modifications to assigned projects.
  • Participates in the planning, designing, and monitoring of projects for substantial new construction, renovation and improvement projects for real property facilities encompassing highly specialized or unique requirements.
  • Serves as a technical consultant concerning facilities planning, design, construction and/or maintenance for different categories of facilities; determine resources and perform long-range planning.
  • Reviews design drawings, indicating basic design corrections, prepare technical specifications, review engineering plans for compliance with numerous regulatory acts.

Qualifications:

  • BS in a discipline of Engineering
  • Minimum ten years experience
  • Military facilities design a plus
  • Knowledge of design and building codes
  • Proficiency in various computer software including Excel, Word, PowerPoint and scheduling software
  • Experience administering and managing design contracts 
  • Ability to have strong rapport with clients
  • Strong written communication skills 
  • Strong interpersonal skills 
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines
