What does a Senior Clerk do?
* Answers questions that require searching for and abstracting technical data; provides detailed explanations of laws, policies, and procedures; reviews non-routine applications, calculates and collects variable fees and other amounts due; and, refers unusual inquiries to his immediate supervisor.
* Reviews documents for accuracy, validity, and compliance with legal or other requirements where the application of highly-specialized knowledge and the resolution of debatable points are required.
* Calculates values, fees, etc., using highly-specialized knowledge of policies and procedures for document recording, property assessment, and tax collection.
* Reviews, records, and maintains time records for employees in a given organizational segment of a County department.
* Provides interpretations of County codes, policies and MOU provisions related to payroll where a highly-specialized knowledge of payroll timekeeping practices and application is essential (the more complex interpretations are made by higher-level payroll staff.)
* Reviews the work of others for accuracy and conformity to established procedures.
* Prepares correspondence and reports requiring the application of highly-specialized knowledge and discrimination in the selection of data, or interpretation of laws, rules, policies and procedures.
* Operates office machines such as computers or terminals, copiers, scanners, or calculators incidental to the performance of duties.
* Indexes and cross-references records and files.
* Sorts, arranges and files documents; retrieves and issues filed materials.
* Lead a small section or unit with responsibility for assigning and coordinating work performed as needed.

Three years of office clerical experience, one year of which must have been in a specialized capacity.*
Special Requirement Information
* Specialized clerical capacity means experience performing specialized clerical duties in a defined subject matter area with continuing responsibility for projects, questions, or problems that arise within an area of a program or functional specialty.
This requires knowledge of rules, regulations, and other guidelines relating to completing assignments in the program area assigned.
Such experience is gained at the level of Los Angeles County's class of Intermediate Clerk, Intermediate Typist-Clerk, or higher.
Examples of specialized capacity office clerical work includes: Cultural and Arts; Compliance and Safety; Consulting, Advisory Services; Customer Service; Education Support; Environmental and Sustainability; Financial; Government and Public Administration; Healthcare; Hospitality and Event Management; Human Resources; IT and Technical Support; Legal; Library; Manufacturing and Production; Marketing and Communications; Nonprofit; Public Relations and Media Management; Quality Assurance; Real Estate; Research and Development; Supply Chain and Logistics, or similar industries.
Acceptable classes for the experience at the level of Los Angeles County's class of Intermediate Clerk, Intermediate Typist-Clerk, or higher include, but may not be limited to: Account Clerk I; Community Health Worker; Eligibility Worker I; Intermediate Cashier; Invoice Clerk; Ownership Clerk I; Patient Resources Worker; Record System Clerk I; Senior Community Worker I; Sheriff Station Clerk I; Statistical Clerk; Tax Service Clerk I; Transcriber-Typist.

License
A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.
Physical Class
Physical Class II- Light: This class includes administrative and clerical positions requiring light physical effort that may include occasional light lifting to a 10-pound limit and some bending, stooping, or squatting. Considerable ambulation may be involved.

Applicants must meet the requirements and achieve a passing score of 70% or higher on the examination in order to be placed on the eligible list.

Eligibility and Vacancy Information
Candidates who passed the assessment are placed on an eligible list in the order of their score group for a period of six (6) months. We will use this list to fill vacancies throughout Los Angeles County as they occur.
In lieu of traditional banding, an alternative banding procedure may be employed as a result of a special study sanctioned by the Department of Human Resources, consistent with Civil Service Rule 11.01(D).
Selective Certification
In accordance with TITLE 5 - PERSONNEL, APPENDIX 1 (Civil Service Rule 11.03) of the Los Angeles County Code, selective certification may be used for some positions that require special skills and/or training.
