The Lifeguard is responsible for upholding safety rules, Y policies, accident prevention and emergency response at the Streator YMCA pool. This position functions as a part-time position and hours vary depending on the season.

**ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS**:

- Maintains active surveillance of the pool area.
- Responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies, procedures; completes related reports as required.
- Responds to challenges with possible solutions in a timely manner.
- Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies, and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area.
- Remains calm and objective when under pressure or when challenged by others.
- Performs all secondary duties in a timely manner as required for each shift.
- Performs all lifeguard duties, including ability to lift people out of pool, perform CPR, scan pool to ensure safety of participants.
- Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed.
- Checks the pool for hazardous conditions when arriving and for the duration of the shift.
- Performs basic chemical testing when required for shift and takes appropriate action.
- Attends Staff meetings and training as scheduled.
- Other duties as assigned by the Aquatics Director.

**QUALIFICATIONS**:

- Must be 16 years of age.
- Certifications: CPR, AED, First Aid, and Blood Borne Pathogens. (obtain within 60 days of hire)
- Holds a current Red Cross Lifeguard certification.
- Ability to maintain certification-level of physical and mental readiness.
- Must demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with Red Cross standards.
- Excellent interpersonal and problem solving skills.
- Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community

**WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS**:

- Work is performed in an indoor aquatics environment.
- Must be able to hear noises and distress signals in the aquatic environment, including in the water and anywhere around the zone of responsibility.
- Remain alert with no lapses of consciousness.
- See and observe all sections of an assigned zone or area of responsibility.
- Ability to sit or stand for long periods at a time are required, as well as, the ability to hold breath under water when necessary.

Pay: From $14.00 per hour
