**Mandarin Teacher**

**JOB DESCRIPTION**

**Summary/Objective**

The Magellan International School (MIS)(Colegio Internacional Magallanes), a Spanish immersion school in Austin, Texas, has an opening for a full-time Mandarin Teacher. This position will work with our Primary and Middle School (3rd-7th grades) students. The Mandarin Teacher is responsible for creating a progressive learning environment where students can demonstrate thoughtful and ethical behavior and ensure that the values and principles of the International Baccalaureate (IB) learner profile are at the heart of learning and relationships in the school.

**Essential Functions**
- Plan and teach Mandarin lessons following the IB curriculum that differentiate for individual student needs.
- Use a wide range of technologies and creative teaching styles.
- Contribute regularly to curriculum planning and development including interdisciplinary units of work and the development of transdisciplinary skills.
- Plan with colleagues to deliver effective team teaching when possible.
- Attend regular curriculum planning and student progress meetings.
- Communicate students' progress toward realizing academic character development goals.

**Essential Functions As They Relate To**:
**Students**
- Promote high standards and expectations for all students for academic performance and responsibility for behavior.
- Build upon students’ prior knowledge of grammar, vocabulary, word usage, and the mechanics of writing to develop skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening.
- Teach acting principles and techniques to individuals or groups.
- Adapt course of study and training methods to meet students’ needs and abilities.
- Serve as a role model for students, dressing professionally, demonstrating the importance and relevance of learning, accepting responsibility, and demonstrating pride in the education profession.
- Ensure that the instructional programs engage the learner in tasks that require analytical and critical thinking, questioning the known, problem solving and creativity, that they address the range of skills and developmental needs found in the classroom.
- Encourage students to define individual goals.
- Maintain a safe and creative environment for their students.

**Faculty**
- Contribute to teaching teams by working effectively with individuals with diverse backgrounds.
- Attend staff/faculty meetings.
- Meet with Primary Years Programme (PYP) and Middle Years Programme (MYP) Coordinators to review curriculum plans and activities and evaluate program's effectiveness.

**Administration**
- Maintain records on each child's progress and development.
- Keep up-to-date records of attendance, curriculum, and assessment tasks in Managebac and Toddle
- Carry out supervision at break times, lunch times, and other times as required.
- Prepare documentation for IB external assessment.

**Parents**
- Communicate professionally and effectively to parents about student progress
- Conduct individual parent conferences at the end of each term.
- Establish a positive relationship with each student's family.
- Give presentations to parents as needed.
- Attend parent meetings when required.
- Communicate and collaborate with parents of high needs students.

**Required Qualifications**
- Bachelor's Degree in teaching or similar degree.
- Fluency in Mandarin; ability to communicate effectively in Mandarin, both orally and in writing, using proper grammar and vocabulary.
- A minimum of two years of experience teaching Mandarin.
- Experience in integrating information technology with teaching.
- Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of curriculum development and program evaluation, child growth and development, effective instructional strategies, classroom management, and learning assessment.
- Ability to create a stimulating classroom environment.
- Ability to utilize the local context and environment to enhance learning.
- Ability to work with parents.

**Work Environment**

This job operates in a classroom environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines and requires lifting, bending, standing, and stooping.
