Pay Schedule II, Grade H24, Regular Schedule: 40 hours per week

A vacancy exists in the Fire Department.

A list of eligible applicants will be established based on the examination as outlined below.

Current and future vacancies occurring in any Office or Department of Baltimore County General Government may be filled from the list of eligible applicants.

**Examples of Duties**:
Under general supervision, maintains and repairs self-contained breathing apparatus, oxygen delivery systems, and high pressure breathing air systems, and repairs and maintains the inventory of self-contained air cylinders.
- Performs preventive maintenance and repairs on breathing apparatus facepiece, regulator, reducing valve body, audi-alarm, harness, carrier and cylinder. Maintains components of oxygen valves, regulators, and on-board oxygen delivery systems. Monitors the testing of electrical gloves, sleeves, and electrical Hot Stick devices. Calibrates and repairs explosimeters, electronic gas meters, and carbon monoxide detectors.
- Repairs defective air cylinders. Returns air cylinders to service after hydrostatic testing, replacing cylinder valve, and filling with breathing air. Maintains sufficient inventory of filled air bottles to meet the needs of the department.
- Prepares cost analyses and annual reports on breathing apparatus repairs. Maintains records pertaining to the repair and preventative maintenance of self-contained breathing apparatus and oxygen equipment. Monitors records for accuracy. Maintains inventory of all parts.
- Develops and presents training programs for the care and maintenance of breathing apparatus by field personnel.

**Examples of Other Duties**
Drives an automobile or light truck to transport tools and materials between work sites. Performs other related duties as required.

**Required Qualifications**
Possession of a high school diploma or an appropriate equivalent.

**Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (Entry Level)**
Thorough knowledge of the operation, components, and maintenance of self-contained breathing apparatus. Thorough knowledge of the tools and equipment used to repair and maintain same. Thorough knowledge of safety procedures related to repair and maintenance of breathing apparatus and air and oxygen delivery systems.

Ability to diagnose, repair, and maintain self-contained breathing apparatus using the appropriate tools and equipment. Ability to diagnose, repair, and troubleshoot fixed oxygen delivery systems. Ability to understand and interpret manufacturer's specifications, repair manuals, and mechanical drawings and schematics. Ability to keep records pertaining to repair and maintenance. Ability to instruct others in the use, care, repair, and maintenance of breathing apparatus. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

**Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (Full Performance)**
Knowledge of the structure and function of the Fire Department. Knowledge of County and departmental rules, regulations, policies, and procedures governing the performance of duties.

Skill in diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining self-contained breathing apparatus using the appropriate tools and equipment. Skill in diagnosing, repairing, and troubleshooting fixed oxygen delivery systems. Skill in interpreting manufacturer's specifications, repair manuals, and mechanical drawings and schematics. Skill in keeping records pertaining to repair and maintenance. Skill in instructing others in the use, care, repair, and maintenance of breathing apparatus.

**Licenses and Certificates**
Possession of a valid license equivalent to a non-commercial, class C Maryland driver's license is required at the time of appointment.

**Proof of Licenses, Certifications and Education**
Applicants are required to submit proof of licenses, certifications and education beyond high school to meet the required and preferred qualifications of the position. Diplomas or transcripts must show the applicant’s major field of study. Copies and unofficial transcripts are acceptable.
