Head Brewer - Second District Brewing Company
We reside on a small side street deep in South Philadelphia, encompassing a former tool shop and 3 bay garage. We have woven ourselves into the fabric of the neighborhood and 7 years in have established ourselves as a standout operation in a city that LOVES beer. Our thoughtful ales and lagers are made with care and introspection, straddling both traditional and experimental approaches. The brewhouse is entirely manual, direct fired 7BBL / 7FV / 3B plus a small barrel program. The adjacent Barroom is open 7 days a week with a full service kitchen. Additional off premise contract brewing for wholesale product is supplementary, and self-distributed. The Second District Brew Farm in Honesdale PA is our seasonal tasting room, operating from May through September, where we also maintain a small hop field, produce gardens and a micro orchard which may be used to provide farm raised ingredients. 1000 sq ft of underground wine cellars are on site for long-term temperature-controlled storage.
The Head Brewer is responsible for all aspects of production in the brewhouse, from receiving grain to pouring the finished product. The Head Brewer is given broad creative expression, providing deliverables are executed with care and meet quality control and are informed by market trends and seasonal demands. Working side by side with the Brewpub management and Wholesale department to ensure the final product is the best possible expression of the Second District brand is paramount. Training assistants and working with guest brewers and staff collaborators is encouraged and expected.
Job Requirements
- Ability to execute all procedures needed for the production of high quality beer.
- Ability to follow standard brewing procedures to ensure quality is never compromised
- Ability to maintain a clean environment in the brewhouse to prevent cross contamination and ensure a quality finished product
- Ability to work safely, and follow company standard procedures and protocols
- Ability to maintain and troubleshoot basic issues with brewery equipment
- Comprehensive knowledge of ingredients and recipe formulation
- Ability to write and plan a brew production schedule
- Ability to execute beer related events on and off premises
- Ability to inform bar staff about all aspects of the product and to generate excitement and enthusiasm for passing information to the guests.
- Assist with TTB reporting and record keeping
Second District used EKOS Brewery software for planning and tracking all aspects of production, sales and inventory management. Prior knowledge of EKOS platform is helpful and recommended. Training is available.
A minimum of 5 years brewing experience and leadership in the industry is preferred.
