Since 1977, the Fairfax County Department of Transportation (FCDOT) has served the Fairfax County community by enhancing mobility, safety, and the quality of life of residents, businesses, and visitors through planning, coordinating, funding, implementing, and sustaining a multimodal transportation system. FCDOT is seeking an innovative, motivated and qualified Transportation Planner II to join the Active Transportation, Capital Projects, and Traffic Engineering Division (ACTD). This position works for projects in Fairfax County’s Residential Traffic Administration Program, which include the Traffic Calming Program, Cut-Through Traffic Restriction Program, Through Truck Restriction Program, $200 additional Fine for Speeding Program and the Watch for Children Program. This position may also perform work supporting Residential Parking Programs and associated street sign management.

Responsibilities include:

- Evaluating residential traffic issues for program eligibility
- Managing residential traffic programs, including processing, analyzing, and reporting results and providing recommendations to Board of Supervisors’ office staff
- Using Excel and ArcGIS to create, issue, and evaluate qualifying public ballot packages; using ArcGIS to maintain relevant map layers, to produce project maps
- Evaluating and updating public content for program web pages, including program maps
- Managing inventory of program materials
- Maintaining all program databases to ensure data is accurate and up to date
- Preparing and attending public hearings, workshops, community, state and national events, and presenting information to residents, community associations, and other agencies
- Preparing official items for Board of Supervisors’ consideration, and other written materials as required to successfully complete projects or assignments
- Performing other duties as assigned

**MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS**:
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the following:

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor's degree in civil engineering, urban, regional or transportation planning, or a closely related field; plus two years of professional experience in civil engineering, urban, regional or transportation planning, or a closely related field.

**CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED**:
A valid motor vehicle driver's license.

**NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS**:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a driving record check to the satisfaction of the employer.

**PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS**:

- Knowledge of the principles and methods of traffic engineering and analysis
- Three or more years of paraprofessional experience in traffic engineering or transportation planning program administration
- Two years of experience in using Geographic Information System (GIS) tools, database software, design software, and/or traffic analysis tools
- Strong project management skills, ability to organize and coordinate multiple projects and assignments, and establish priorities
- Experience in preparing and reviewing transportation or traffic analysis
- Experience in coordinating with local and state government entities, including elected officials
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, strong negotiation skills
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees, public officials, and the general public

**PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS**:
Ability to input, access, and retrieve information from a computer. Ability to lift up to 25 pounds. Ability to stand, stoop, bend, stretch, walk, climb, sit, kneel, crouch, reach, crawl, lift and handle materials with manual dexterity. Visual acuity to review detailed drawings, plans and documents. Ability to operate keyboard driven equipment. Ability to operate motor vehicle. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
