Medical Records Specialist and Medical Coder

Under the general direction of the Compliance Director, the Certified Coder and Medical Records Specialist is responsible for the timely and complete management of Medical Records and prebilling physician and nurse practitioner coding audits and education.

Position will conduct focused coding audits of documentation to determine completeness, consistency and appropriateness of coding prior to billing being sent. Will develop and implement education and training for Medical staff related to coding compliance.

**EDUCATION AND/OR TRAINING REQUIRED**:
Certified Coding Professional having completed Coder Education College education preferred

Hospice knowledge and experience preferred

**CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES REQUIRED**:
American Association of Professional Coders (AAPC) Certification - Certified Professional Coder (CPC) comparable Coding Certification

**EXPERIENCE/SPECIFIC SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED**

Past experience conducting medical record and billing reviews. Skilled in the management and in utilizing electronic medical records for audits. Possess strong analytical skills. Ability to communicate effectively. Skilled in Microsoft Office Suite programs; strong knowledge of other computer software; detail oriented to tasks; consistently follows rules/protocols; works independently; manages multiple projects, prioritize and complete projects on time; and track documents to ensure proper filing when received. Knowledge of medical terminology is preferred.

**PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES**:

- Responsible for the accurate input, management and oversight of the SFR Medical Records. These are both paper records and electronic records.
- Responds to record requests timely.
- Alerts Compliance and Privacy Director of all record requests and seeks advice and assistance when responding to unusual or unacceptable requests.
- Serves as HIPAA privacy reviewer and refers HIPAA issues to the Compliance and Privacy Officer.
- Contacts patients, families and other entities seeking medical records and informs them of policies utilizing excellent customer service.
- Develop and maintain a prebilling coding audit tool applicable to all levels of hospice, palliative care in various home, inpatient, assisted living and nursing facility settings.
- Develops and delivers coding support education and training to the medical staff to support their knowledge and resources.
